"Configuration / Edit/View / Associations..." VS "Lister plagin" FOR .pdf files ON Windows 10

Post by *Kosarar »

What is the purpose of "Configuration / Edit/View / Associations..." option (TC help is not informative here)? Is it somehow different from "Lister plugin"? I can not make TC view PDF files with Chrome - actually, even when I double click on them, Windows 10 ALWAYS asks which program should it use. When I do it from File explorer, Windows does not ask that.

The purpose is to set up associations for opening different file types with different external viewers:

See: http://madsenworld.dk/tcmd/associate_pdf_chrome.png

Then you can open pdf files in Chrome by pressing Alt+F3

The screenshot if from Windows 7 but I have tested it under Windows 10 - works fine

It works, thank you. Still, it is strange that when I double click on a PDF file, Windows 10 ALWAYS asks which program should it use. I found these solutions, but they are unacceptable:

Well this approach usually works for me:

1. Right click on af file (.pdf in this case)
2. Choose "Open with"
3. Click on "Choose another app"
4. Select the app/program you want to use
5. And - most important - check the box "Always use this app to open .pdf files"
6. Click OK

See: http://madsenworld.dk/tcmd/chooseapp.png

If the app you want to use is the same as Windows suggests to keep, then it might help to associate with another app ( with the "Always use this app" option set) - and then redo the association to the original app.

Sadly, that check box is not present:

I tried a complex system of Windows 10 associations with no success. And most importantly - it works smoothly in Explorer, but not in TC.

It is not a TC dialog you should use - It is a Windows dialog. It is in TC's main window that you must right click on a file - you can also do it from File Explorer

I do not think the dialog I presented is TC one. It is probably from Windows core.

I right clicked on a .pdf file in TC's main window and got the following results:

Usually, I double left click, or press Enter though. Both in Explorer or TC. Strange that the outcomes differ.

And then you click on "Open with" and thereafter on "Choose another app". as explained above.

Whoops, it worked (this phrase was a bit confusing: "It is not a TC dialog you should use - It is a Windows dialog. It is in TC's main window that you must right click on a file - you can also do it from File Explorer")! Somehow the check box appeared and everything is fine now. There was no such problems in previous Windows!

Thank you!

You can also use "Internal Associations" within Total Commander to open *.pdf files with Chrome when you double click on *.pdf files.

Files -> Internal Associations (Total Commander only)...

Type name:
*.pdf

Actions:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --new-window --start-maximized "%1"
