Difference between 32bit and 64bit

Post by *Andre Linoge »

Goodmorning

Recently i began using Windows 10, it appears to be an 64bit system pc while i installed the 32bit of TC.

Can somebody explain to me the difference between the 32bit and 64bit of Total Commander??

TIA

Windows 10 exist in 32-bit version too :)

I'm on Windows 10 64-bit and just run both TC version all the time.

There is very few benefits of running 64-bit version:
Browse or create very large archives and browse folders with very large number of files.
View very large images.

But there is still good reasons to use 32-bit TC, even on 64-bit Windows, mainly much more plugins, especially File System.

In my humble opinion:

Pro 64:
- In 64-bit OS there are places a 32-bit application can't see. (just use WinEx for that)
>> viewtopic.php?f=3&t=25743

- A 64-bit App can "get" (allocate) more memory space. (only important if one use folders with 100.000 files
or launch other programs who will need more memory for there work)

- Third party app can install context menu entries both for 32- and 64-bit. Some install 64-bit one only.
The 64-bit TC will show that "64-bit" entries in the main context menu, the 32-bit TC in a sub-menu "X64 >". (not that important)

Pro 32:
- There are still (most older) plugins for 32-bit only. (but in the meantime there are many plugins for 64-bit too)
- runs on 32-bit AND 64-bit machines

For me I use 32-bit TC on 64-bit OS all the time, no issues.
Me think the 64-bit TC was just created for people they thought they must use a 64-bit App on a 64-bit OS and other way won't buy TC anymore.

But you can just use the combined 32/64-bit TC download and start the 32- or the 64-bit EXE just for your current need.

August 21, 2018: Total Commander 9.21a final (32+64 bit) for Windows released
32-bit version only (Windows 95 up to Windows 10, runs on 32-bit AND 64-bit machines!)
64-bit version only (Windows XP up to Windows 10, runs ONLY on 64-bit machines!)
64-bit+32-bit combined download (Windows 95 up to Windows 10, 32-bit AND 64-bit machines!)

any other opinions?

The 64-bit TC will show that "64-bit" entries in the main context menu, the 32-bit TC in a sub-menu "X64 >". (not that important)
Not only context menus but all shell extensions (thumbnails, icon provider, property pages) may be effected.
You may miss some of them running TC32 on OS64.
(BTW: TC64 bit can also show 32 Bit context menu entries if this is set explicitly to 1 in wincmd.ini:
X64menu= Show 'x64' submenu in context menu ('x32' in 64-bit version), default =1 in 32-bit only)

Running scripts (cmd, vbs,...) from TC32 will use a 32 command environment.
These scripts will most probably access only 32 bits parts of the OS (registry, filesystem) and may fail to do what they meant for.
E.g. some system tools like regsvr32 will be started as 32 bit version, and fail to register 64 bit COM-Components, and so on.
User would complain that TC fails in this case because doing the same from Explorer just does the job.

There are a lot of reasons to use a 64bit TC (not only for administrative Task).

At least for lister plugins and F3 (not for quick view) you can configure the 64-bit TC to use the 32-bit TC as external viewer:

Code: Select all

"%COMMANDER_PATH%\Totalcmd.exe" /N /S=L "%1"
