Is there a max number of file copy or moves allowed? (Copy over 1 million files stopped after 256 GB)

Post by *ericw »

Hi, new user here, so maybe I have missed something:

I am trying to copy years of photos (over 1 million files) from thousands of folders onto another drive in order to remove duplicates, etc.

I set up the copy function that seemed to work, but then it stopped after 256 GB. I did this twice, same result each time.

Any advice?

Thanks in advance.

Maybe your computer went into sleep or hibernation mode - Change your power settings to avoid that.

Good suggestion, but I had already turned off both while plugged in.

Did you get any kind of error? For example, the number of files in the root of a drive is limited. You can run into this problem when trying to backup many files to a USB stick. Solution: Create a subfolder and put them in there. Subfolders are in principle just files, so they can grow to accept more files if necessary.

You could have an issue with version of Operating System and/or of the File structure on your drive.

See this Microsoft table:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/140365/default-cluster-size-for-ntfs-fat-and-exfat

Also look for file size vs block size.
'Bad' USB stick with capacity less than advertised?

Here is an example:

This is Win10, TC9.51 and a 64GB SD card.
