Long uploads to the server

Post by *Rostov »

Hi, I'm from Poland.
I'm using Total Commander (x64) 9.50.
I have been observing strange behavior while uploading files to the server for some time.
After starting the upload of a 5.49 MB file, the progress bar immediately loads 100% in the pop-up window, several times - as if TC connects to the server several times before sending the file to it.
I attach the TC log:

FileZilla behaves very similar.

I don't have any firewall software. System antivirus only: Microsoft Security Essentials. I tried to disable real-time protection on it. It didn't help.
I thought it was the fault of the Ivacy VPN I recently installed, but neither turned off nor uninstalled the problem persisted.
I also thought it was the fault of changing DNS from Orange to Cloudflare, but going back to the default ones didn't help either.
I created an account on a different, free hosting site and uploading files works the same weird there, so it's neither the FTP client's fault, nor the hosting.
After connecting to the server on the computer (Total Commander) via the mobile phone serving as a hotspot (3G mobile data) - the problem persists.
After connecting to the server directly from the mobile phone (3G mobile data + AndFTP client) the problem does not occur - upload percentage by percentage.
I tried to add a line:
DataConnectTimeout = 30
to wcx_ftp.ini, in the [General] section, but that didn't fix the problem either.
What could this indicate?

Re: Long uploads to the server

Post by *Dalai »

This behavior is normal when the files uploaded are small enough to fit in the OS's cache. Since local storage is (normally) much faster than network targets, files get read into the cache and essentially uploaded from there. When copying large files to an SMB server, this can also be observed in Windows Task Manager: memory usage increases fast and is reduced slowly when the cache is written to the server.

You can somewhat reduce the effect by setting a transfer bandwith limit in TC's background transfer (manager). This seems to also limit the speed with which a file is read from the source.

@Dalai, thank you for your answer. But 2-3 weeks ago this problem did not occur. Besides, when I try to send a larger file (99.6MB), the problem is the same:

The file is sent as if in parts, and between sending each part, the server disconnects because the progress indicator shows 0% from time to time. Only after reconnecting to the server, the progress increases by a certain amount of percent. Previously, uploading a file to the server was done in one connection, percentage by percentage, and I could keep track of how much data was left to upload.

Well, did you upgrade your system, i.e. increase RAM capacity? Or do you have more free RAM available than before? If so, the OS cache is much larger and provides more room for larger files.

Maybe also the server had its timeout shortened. Some servers require the client to send commands within a certain timespan. Data that's sent doesn't account for that.

Re: Long uploads to the server

Thank you for your answer. I increased the amount of RAM over half a year ago. But this problem has only been occurring for 2-3 weeks, in addition, on two independent hosting sites.

I just ran a test and noticed a strange thing. I decided to upload the same file (99.6 MB) to the WeTransfer file hosting. Through the Chrome browser. Until now, by uploading a file to WeTransfer, I was able to observe how data is sent in tenths of a megabyte. Meanwhile, today 24% of the file jumped on the progress counter, which is not possible with my internet speed. This 24% was shown on the timer for about 10 minutes, which is the time it would normally take to send this part of the file. It looks as if the file being sent is split into parts and those parts are somehow buffered.
What could be causing this?

Update TC to the current version and do some tests using Background Transfer Manager, as it's been already suggested. There may be some bug in TC, there may be also some strange settings on the server-side (for example, transfer limitations for anonymous and/or free users).

So it may be also some problem with your Internet provider or some updated software (internet security suite/firewall/antivirus/proxy, Windows itself).

As I wrote in the previous post, FileZilla and Chrome behave the same, so updating TC is unlikely to change anything.

I use Windows Firewall for firewall, Microsoft Security Essentials for antivirus. I turned them off for trial - no effect.

If you want to ensure that it's not a problem with TC, do update it, please. It won't be worse.
And if it's not a problem with TC, this forum is not the best place to search for help, I'm afraid. So I can only ask some more questions:
How do you connect to the Internet? Directly to your ISP provider, through the router, through LAN, other way?
Can you test other Windows versions/builds?
Can you test your PC when connected to another ISP (ask your friend or neighbour)?

Since you already identified the problem not being with TC itself, i suggest to ask in forum that are having a focus on FTP-related things (such as the Filezilla forum) or on superuser.com, if you have not done so already. This should give you better chances of receiving meaningful help.

I am not trying to discourage you from seeking help here. But consider this:

This forum here is frequented primarily by TC users, with only a fraction of them having a deeper insight/knowledge in FTP/networking stuff.
On the other hand, on the Filezilla forum (which covers both the Filezilla client and server as well as FTP in general), for example, where most discussions revolve just around FTP, a much larger part of the forum population will be knowledgeable about the ins and outs of FTP and the multitude of possible problems and/or client-server interactions/behavior.

Superuser.com might also be a good place to ask, due to its high visibility and vast user base. However, superuser.com being a Q&A site, it is an ill fit for a forth-and-back discussion, and it kinda requires an asker to put some effort into writing the question well (otherwise the question might get ignored)

I was able to fix the problem myself.
It turned out that the reason was the "Ignore local traffic within the LAN" option in the NetWorx application.
Anyway, thank you all for your answers and willingness to help. :)
