How to type a backslash?

Post by *axel-berger »

I prefer not to use the mause and control TC through the keyboard. In TC under Win98 just typing e.g. "C:<Return>" or "D:<Enter>" sent the input to the command line and switched drives. Typing "\\<Enter>" the same way sent me to the desktop where I could easily choose "Network". Unter Win8.1 and Win10 the <AltGr> *always* takes me into search unless I type something else, a letter, first. But then that typed letter intereferes. How do I get the old functionality back without having to resort to the mouse?

(N.B: I looked but couldn't find this problem discussed in the archive.) Danke Axel

This is caused by Quicksearch feature.
Note: AltGr = Alt + Ctrl

You can set the according option at "Configuration - Options - Quicksearch" (Konfigurieren - Einstellungen - Schnellsuche)

Yes, thank you. I had forgotten about that setting. Unforunately I like the quick search and use it often. In Win98 I could have both, quick search with normal letters and backslash. Now I shall have to choose and decide which is more important to me.

There is always that old trick to write a character by the ASCII number.

Hold down the ALT key and type 92 on the numeric keyboard and release ALT key.
This writes an \

On a default German KB layout, the '\' is located to right of '0' key.
Hold <AltGr> click <ß> release <AltGr> should give '\'.

If you are using a non German KB with a Windows German overlay, the key in question may have '-' (US KB) or '+' (Danish KB) etc.
