Ctrl+C won't copy files to clipboard

Post by *Michael.W »

Can't anymore copy files to the clipboard and paste from it. Neither ctrl+c nor ctrl+v are working anymore :-/.

Since I installed the new TC on a fresh system (I copied of course all the user settings from the old system) I am not sure if it's a bug in the new version or if it's sth else.

Either way, I would be very thankful if someone could help me to find a solution for this
(I tested with X64 and the 32 bit version of the commander, it won't work on both of them)

Just a guess in the dark: Are you running TC as administrator and want to paste to an other (not elevated) program/desktop ?
Windows does not allow to do a copy/paste in this case ...

Sending messages from lower privileged processes to higher privileged ones is restricted. OK, I admit, copying from clipboard or sending to it are (probably) also messages, but AFAIK these are not restricted.

Does it work in Explorer and/or other programs? Which OS are we talking about?

As Dalai already said, copy and paste between programs are not restricted regardless of their priviledges.
Thats no securiyt risk because the receiving part must active fetch the content
and can't be forced from the other side to do so.
Restrictions are only if one programs tries to send keystrokes or other form of messages
to higher priviledged programs.

Thank you all for your answers.

@Dalai:
I use Windows 10 Pro
In Windows Explorer ctrl+c and ctrl+v work as expected

@Horst.Epp, Dalai and sqa_wizard:
Some of your answers said that copy and paste should work, regardless of running tc with admin rights or not (that's what I also thought).
Anyway, I gave it a try and was surprised that when I run TC with admin rights all works as expected.
I am now wondering if you all run tc with admin rights (and therefore cannot experience the reported issue) or if it works on your systems without the admin privileges (which classifies it still as a bug)?

Glad that it now works again as before (I forgot that I had activated admin rights per default in my last installation).
Already thanks for your effort and help

I tested this before my post and it works here even between programs running with diffferent rights.
You method of running all with enhanced rights is not necessary and the badest thing for your security.

Please run TC (temporarily) with a clean INI file, like this

Code: Select all

totalcmd64.exe /i="%temp%\fresh.ini"
and try again. I'm curious to see if that changes anything. Also note that Ctrl+C won't work when a blocking modal window is open somewhere in TC or its Lister, like the "not found" message from Lister when searching for anything. Or rather, it works, but it doesn't necessarily copy what you expect but the modal dialog's contents instead. TC 10 has a workaround and notification for that, but since this thread is in TC 9.5x bug reports, I guess you're not using that.

When you run TC the regular way you'll have your TC settings again.

Hmmm, really strange. Now it works even with the old ini and without admin rights.
It doesn't really make sense, but better to have a fixed software without knowing how it got fixed than the other way round ;-).
I think that this 'bug' can be closed (since I am not able to reproduce on my system).
Thank you all for your help.

Well, my guess is that some modal dialog was open when you pressed Ctrl+C which put the dialog contents into the clipboard instead of the files under the cursor in TC's main window. That could/would explain it.
