Feature Request: "Open with..." support

Post by *BillyBob »

It would be great to be able to tap and hold on a file to get the context
menu with the "Open with...." option.

I have Pocket Word and TextMaker. I associated .doc files with TextMaker
but don't always want to open them with TextMaker or viceversa.

Pocket Word does not have an Open File command so I can't open the .doc files with Pocket Word if I want to.

There are other times I want to open a file with a program that is not associated with the file as well.

Thanks for a great program!!!

You can drag Pocket Word to the secondary button bar to add it. Then tap&hold on it to add the parameters %P%N

After doing that, tapping on that button will open the file in Pocket Word.

You can do it the following way: open word using the start menu. If a document is alredy open, close it. Now word presents you with a file list that looks like explorer. If you tap on a document, Word should open it.

If the document is opened by TexMaker also, we found just another thing that Microsoft didn't do right, because if I'm in Word's own file selector, I want Word to open whatever I give it to. ;)

You are right! I thought I had tried this......but I guess not.

Am I not right thinking that you can't set a separate "Open with" program for each individual operation, the way GS Finder does it ? I.e. I can set a global "Open with" button but it will always attempt to open with same application.

I still think "open with" should be set individually for a particular operation.

Yes, GSFinder lets you place any number of shortcuts in \Windows\SendTo to provide an "open with" functionality. The only drawback is that the parameters required by the programs have to be consistently either in quotes or not -- you can't use both kinds of programs at the same time. For example, neither Tillanosoft's Pocket Notepad nor Pocket Word will work with the quotes, while some editors, like cke, require them ("%1" as opposed to just %1).

Wih Total Commander, however, you can specify any variety of programs you want -- if you have enough room left on your button bar, that is.

Well, it seems then all we need is the "Open with" dialog with a checkmark in it for quotes around "%1". So you can use it either way.
