one BIG wish for next TC version
I wonder why a very useful function like this have been missed for YEARS by file managers developers
When NC was the master of file managers he had full support for every media storage system(well ... back then there was only the floppy disk and hdd on pc)
Meanwhile after YEARS after the cds/dvds appeared the nowadays master of file managers is way behind NC standards ... no cd/dvd creation support
This is a major disappointment since we don't use floppy anymore to back-up our hundreds of Mb data on our pcs ...
Certainly don't expect that any file manager from now on will rival the "burner" leader Nero but these should have been for YEARS a MUST in ANY file manager, and these MUST should be even more for the leader: TC !!!

I've been using Click'n'Burn by Stomp. With it comes DLA, which -- after preformatting a rw disc -- treats it just like a floppy or zip. TC has no trouble with it. Much as I'd like to see that facility in TC it's not really too painful to have the app running TSR. There must be others out there, possibly shareware.

There are always memory sticks on USBlzvk25 wrote:I don't want to imagine the size of TC would be if it had that kind of support.

Mr. Ghisler expressed also the concern about TC's future size ... So there is always the USB who will make the floppy obsolete
Besides, like Pete said I wouldn't mind this feature beeing available as a plug-in although I don't know if it is recommended.
Yes, I know and it is very good at it ... However, doing some back-ups of your files on a cd and using for this operation the wonderful options that TC offers I would still call TC after completing the task a file manager ...Dominik wrote:TC is supposed to be a [face=arial]file manager[/face] man,not a burning app.
I didn't say that it should support every each of the countless formats Nero does for burning ... I'm talking about a sample of code who can write cds(cd-r,dvd-r) at custom speeds and that's all ... no overburn(I admit these can be useful too) and other functions supported by Nero which size is mainly determined by these ...
- btw
Yes, it seems that for cd-rw/dvd-rw the issue is a lot easier -tcebob wrote: I've been using Click'n'Burn by Stomp. With it comes DLA, which -- after preformatting a rw disc -- treats it just like a floppy or zip. TC has no trouble with it.
I think it would suffice to have the ISO plugin support copying files *to* the ISO images, and creating folders in the ISO etc. This way, you could create your ISOs any way you wanted and then just burn that to CD, something which any burn utility that I know allows you to do almost single-clicking.Pete wrote:maybe somewhere out on this planet someone is already coding a TC plugin for burning CD-ROMs. I don't know.
I think the IMG plugin for disk images supports both reading and writing contents. If this could be added to the ISO plugin that'd be it ...
I agree memory sticks will someday kill the floppy, but not any time soon.Sam York wrote:

Just remember that most of us still download our programs and very few have broadband. Most users only have a dial-up connection at 56k if they are lucky. Therefore downloading something for more than an hour or two is not fun at all - Shall we punish them because where they live they do not have broadband or do not have the money to pay for it ?
And about the memory sticks, there are users that do not have USB ports since they still have old machines - Shall we punish them as well ?.
And what about the updates ? Again, even if the "original" TC was distributed on memory sticks, we still would have to download the new versions.
Even worst, there may be compatibility issues not just with the different versions of Windows, but also with machines and CD burners and this may lead to bloatware.
When it comes to distribution of any application, size and compatibitlity matter. - "Just keep it simple" -

Memo to Boss : No TC, No Work
I have seen some small apps ~ 300 k that did their job quite well burning cds so, since TC is compressed the size could increase with maybe 150 k ... So no hours of downloading like you stated ...lzvk25 wrote: I agree memory sticks will someday kill the floppy, but not any time soon.

Nowadays you can't buy a computer without USB ... BUT I was talking about something else ... Mr. Ghisler expressed his concern about the system administrators that would need only one floppy disk so that they could get around easily on a computer in a network environment "in trouble" ...lzvk25 wrote:And about the memory sticks, there are users that do not have USB ports since they still have old machines - Shall we punish them as well ?
Well, why not two or three floppy disks? I admit that is one reason and you've mention it: distribution ... BUT since the cds price is now below the one of floppy disks maybe ...

So, I'm NOT talking about distribution on memory sticks since this will be for a LONG time a marketing suicide !!! I know that their price is already more than accessible and will continue to get even cheaper but for some years I don't see anyone to turn from floppy/cds/dvds to memory sticks ...
I'm writing lots of cds as back-ups and I know LOTS of "burners" and like I said some range in size from 300 k - 1 Mb and they don't have such severe problems ... but like I said the support of this feature is imminent since even Microsoft implemented in their OS(first in WMP) this feature and they are going to continue on this matter ... So if TC will continue to skip this feature some other file manager won't(if they will not create a function of their own at least they'll do it through OS functions or the up-coming ones)lzvk25 wrote:Even worst, there may be compatibility issues not just with the different versions of Windows, but also with machines and CD burners and this may lead to bloatware.
Wow! This was a long one ...
I also write a good bunch of CD's for backup purposes not only at home, but in the office as well. And specially at the office we have all kinds of machines mostly Dell, HP and Compaq in all kinds of flavors you can imagine, not to mention that sometimes we find some other brand and not to even think about laptops and we ALWAYS have compatibility issues.Sam York wrote: I'm writing lots of cds as back-ups and I know LOTS of "burners" and like I said some range in size from 300 k - 1 Mb and they don't have such severe problems
So, could you please tell me where can I get such "burners" ? It sounds too good to be true. The ones I know that work with most cd-burners are Nero and Easy CD Creator and they continuously update their applications due to compatibility issues, and right now, both applications are not precisely small, only 20 Mb just for the updates.
And about the other "burners" I know, they may work with SOME cd-burners or SOME machines/brands or SOME versions of Windows but in no way they can work with all machines and all versions of Windows.

Not even Nero can do the job properly for every little company that appears one day in Taiwan and disappears the other day ...lzvk25 wrote: And specially at the office we have all kinds of machines mostly Dell, HP and Compaq in all kinds of flavors you can imagine, not to mention that sometimes we find some other brand and not to even think about laptops and we ALWAYS have compatibility issues.

We also have Ibm(mostly), Compaq, Hp, Dell(laptop), Toshiba(laptop) and we have NOT encountered a little problem even with other cdrw like Teac,Plextor(best ever) If you try like a leader does(Nero) to cover every possible writing unit you don't expect to finish the job and to deliver the product on one cd only!
So it will be more than enough to make possible these feature for cdrw like the one's mentioned aboved.
Another reason for doing this will be the financial one ... I WOULDN'T advise ANYONE to buy cdrw that after some "intensive sessions" of burning will destroy every quality brand cd that you bought or even worse the unit would give up on you ... I knew some guys that tried in the summer to write cds with this kind of noname brands(even if the are called somehow) ... I wouldn't tell you what happened after they "burned" no more than - that's right - 3 cds ...
Unfortunately when the companies buy from Dell, HP or any other company they do not pay attention about what kind of cd-burner they got inside their machines. In most cases to cut costs, specially HP and Compaq, they put those taiwan made things and you can imagine our despair. I remember cases where they put Phillips CD-RW's and those were really crappy.
I agree, in an ideal world, we would have only Plextor and Teac, but reality says otherwise.
As far as I know, very few brands like Alienware, allow you to select the brand of cd-burner you want. But if you go to the Dell or any other brand site, they only mention something like "48x CD-RW Drive" and nothing more, everything else is left to your imagination.

I think the phrase is "packet writing". A few CD burner softwares promise it (EZ CD Creator being one). I have not found ANY that will reliably burn files in packet mode to a CD in my USB HP 8200.
I too want to treat a CD as an HD, with random reading and writing, but to expect TC to do that... I don't think so.
Perhaps a plugin created by someone who has access to a plethora of CD writers to test with. Otherwise:
Don't hold your breath.

Emm... only a little remark.
Golden Hawk CDRWin, 600 Kb Setup, 1200 Kb Installed, and it has support for almost the same number of writers that Nero or Easy CD Creator.
Take a look at www.goldenhawk.com
I'm sure you know about it, sorry if it's a stupid comment.
