TC and Vista

Hello!
While I am an old Oldie in the computer world and in using /Norton (original DOS release), WinCmd and TC I have not been active in this forum and a search for Vista support on creating directories, battling the access restrictions, etc. did not give me the answers I was looking for, allow me to ask simple:
- How is/will TC handling Vista?
Surely someone can point me to an already given reply.

Total Commander 6.56 supports Vista, it has been tested by us
on Vista, and made compatible with it. There are some problems with opening documents when the user used the "open with" option, though.

Total Commander 7 beta/RC1 supports some of the new Vista functions, like copying to "forbidden" folders. So I recommend that you use TC7 on Vista.

I am using TC with Vista and all it does is lock up and freez all the time and
I can NOT make it stop, as I have another window opened right now with TC totaly froze up. So when I get done here I will have to turn off my computer to get it working again. But I have found out that Vista don't a bunch of windows open at the same time and it still has a very bag BUG in vista that we found while we were Beta testing that Microsoft never fixed. Ant all this fun...

I cannot reproduce these problems on Vista, Total Commander runs smoothly here. What did you try to do in Total Commander?

When installing TC7 (Release Candidate 1), use contextmenu on setup-file and choose "as admin".
Please don't use v6.xx in Vista anymore, like ghisler(Author) recommended above.

But Microsoft released a Windows Vista Application Compatibility Update, Total Commander 6.55 is listed in there.

I run v7 RC1 without any glitches in Vista.

The TC-helpfile works well even without the modified Windows Help program (WinHlp32.exe) for Windows Vista from MS.

TC hasn't earned the "Certified for Windows Vista-Logo" untill now but comes as a certified archive for Vista.
Not much hard/software has that.

Indeed I'm using the 16-bit winhelp.exe on Vista if winhlp32.exe is missing.

I'm not going to apply for any Windows logo. Why? I would have to remove some very useful TC functions, like selecting with the right mouse button. The logo certification defines that the right mouse button must be used only for the right click menu, and nothing else. There are other such logo requirements which I find inacceptable.

TC 656 can be made to copy files to Vista "Forbidden folders" such as Program Files (x86) by simply disabling Vista User Account Control as follows
Start / Control Panel / User Accounts / Turn User Account Control On or Off
Incidentally, the method given by microsoft did not work for me.

I can also confirm TC Beta 7 works with UAC enabled but you still get the "Please confirm" messages every time you access a file in one of these folders.

You can also right click on the TC desktop icon and choose "run as administrator" (even when already logged in as an admin!) when you need to do a lot of administrative work. This way you do not need to disable UAC, so malicious programs started e.g. from your Web browser don't have full system access.

No, you can simply close Total Commander and open it normally (not via right click menu).

In Vista, you can also run applications 'elevated' from the Start menu by pressing Ctrl-Shift-Enter to launch the application.
