tooltips not completed?

long.file.name.test.to.see.tooltip.on.truncated.file.names (size 9999 bytes)
long.file.name.test.to.see.tooltip.on.truncated.file.names (size 10000 bytes)
long file name test to see tooltip.on.truncated.file.names (size 10000 bytes)
files have identical file names
1. tooltip shows on first file
2. tooltip wont appear on second file, the only difference is 1 byte in size
3. if i replace all dots with spaces, tooltip is displayed on both 9999 and 10000 files.
i thought if there are 4 or less dots in filename counted from end, tooltip is displayed, 5 and more dots and tooltip isnt displayed
but further testing reveals this:
long file name test to see tooltip.on.truncated.file.names.1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.9.10
long file name test to see.tooltip.on.truncated.file.names.1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.9.10
tooltip is displayed even with many more dots (first line)
so maybe its the number of spaces in filename? (second line with one less space and tooltip is not displayed)
this is so weird :)

edit: after lot of tries spent dissecting my ini file i narrowed down the section which causes the trouble.
i have custom columns configured and in that view tooltips get all weird

here's that custom column layout:

This is intentional, to save screen space (mainly when using a fixed width font)...

The ellipsis as a single character isn't part of all fonts in Windows. Therefore I cannot use it, because I cannot control what font is used by a user.
