German: wrong or bad translations

"Kursor" is a quite ugly mix of german and english, I don't think such a word exists. Even www.duden.de knows "Cursor", but not "Kursor".
In all other german translations TC also uses "Cursor".

I would consider "Buttonbar" to be female - a forced translation would be "die Knopfleiste" - right?
Therefore I would leave out the "n".

Referring to help file "buttonbar" seems to be male. "Knopfleiste" used in help would be not correct as per MS Style Guide.
"button" should be localized to "Schaltfläche" in German and not "Knopf" but Swiss may be different.

I am still wondering why "Buttonbar" is left as is for German.
Why is it not translated to "Schaltflächenleiste"?

:) Hello !
…Referring to help file "buttonbar" seems to be male. …
• Thus, it has a pair of b***s ?
• In English, a noun is either masculine, or feminine (even talking of other languages) or neuter for inanimate objects (in English)…
- “male” and “female” stand for animated things only… ;)

:) Well ! I don't know German really, but my Oxford dictionary says :
b (of electric bell etc., on fencing foil) Knopf, der; press or push the button auf den Knopf drücken;

Thanks, I just had those "m", "f" and "n" in my dictionaries. :)

Yes, "Knopf" is masculine, but "Leiste" (-bar) is feminine.
The Oxford is a good idea: I just asked Google for german translations of "bar" - there are 22 different ones (including some that fit), both m. and f. - so I see that feminine or not feminine depends on interpretation...

2Heppchen
Why is it not translated to "Schaltflächenleiste"?
 I don't like those forced translations.
Printing "Strg" instead of "Ctrl" on german keyboards lead quite a few people to pronouncing it "String" instead of "Control" or "Steuerung"...

While I probably wouldn't care of calling the Buttonbar something else,
"Kursor" looks horrible (next step could be "Körser") and has different spellings in the same file.

"Schaltflächenleiste" is a silly IBM word creation from last century ...

"Symbolleiste" would be better.

:) Still Oxford…

Oxford dic. wrote
(on screen) Cursor, der; Schreibmarke, die;
• Unfortunately, updates¦upgrades for that dictionary (as software) are unobtainable… Same for the Harraps one :(

Isn't discussing German translation issues in the international English speaking section a somewhat strange idea? :?

:) Hello Karl !
Isn't discussing German translation issues in the international English speaking section a somewhat strange idea? :?
• Most certainly… But on another hand, anybody interested in languages may bring some drops in the German mug… ;)

I guess, StatusQuo considers it a bug - and there is no bug report section in the German forum.

Hi, petermad.

But Status Quo knows pretty well that bug reports posted in the German forum are not ignored by Christian Ghisler.

Well, Clo's Oxford already helped a lot, don't you think? ;)

Yes, the main reason to report it here was the missing german bug reports forum.
And, from the English forum (TC7.5b7 bug: "Control deleted from background thread!):
ghisler(Author) wrote:Btw, why is this in the English forum and not the bug reports forum?
P.S.: Just yesterday I read a german topic about the Help - if had found this one earlier, I probably would have appended it there.

I am sure you are right, but if it wasn't for StatusQuo I would never have been introduced to words like: Schaltflächenleiste, Knopfleiste and Körser - those words really made me laugh :-D

The German language really have some funny words (involuntary, I'm sure) - take for example drehmutter or zahnfleisch ;-)
