Dialog text out of border

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

Dialog text out of border

Post by *Sam_Zen »

Due to getting a much bigger screen, I had to redefine some fonts in the system to keep it readable.
So I changed the font type of the "Dialog box font" to 'Microsoft Sans Serif, 10,b'.
Some text didn't fit anymore, or lost the lower strokes of some letters. So I changed to point 9.
But it didn't help. The dimensions of some frames or buttons seems to be fixed.

I wonder about the necessity of those trailing three dots by the way.

2Sam_Zen,

Add OverrideDPI=120 to your wincmd.ini and reduce the font size by one step.
History.txt wrote:24.04.07 Added: (Experimental, undocumented): wincmd.ini [Configuration] OverrideDPI=120 scales all dialog boxes (except for the main window!) to the given size in dots per inch. Normal is 96 dpi

Added the line to the INI.
After close/run TC the problem wasn't solved. Even with the font at point 8.

:) Hello Sam !

• It seems that you are using a bold font. Maybe could you try a normal one ?
- Also, you could play with the screen definition to find the optimal one (I had to do so when I installed a new LCD monitor some months ago…).
- Ensure you that you are using the current definition section, and not the [AllDefinitions] one…
- The last : You could try the narrow font in the sub-dir “Police_étroite” of this SMALL PACKAGE.

This is a standard Windows GUI design, you can find these three dots used in all Apps, a command label with three dots means that command will not executed directly but it will show a dialog box.

Try a smaller font size, e.g. 7, combined with a higher DPI size. The font will be scaled with the rest of the dialog.

Thanks all.
I wanted to avoid using font size 7, it would be too small for my ole eyes, but a combination of unbolding and DPI=120 solved it already.
As Clo suggested, I'm going to experiment with other screen definitions as well. As with other DPI values.

Changing from small 4:3 to a big 16:9 is like rearranging your tools in a new, bigger toolbox.

I can confirm that the string can not fit in the buttons in your example, but I cannot confirm that the underlining of accellerator keys is not shown neither with XP theme: http://madsenworld.dk/tcmd/10b.png nor with Classic theme; http://madsenworld.dk/tcmd/10bC.png

:) Hello !
This is a standard Windows GUI design, you can find these three dots used in all Apps, …
• That's right, useful and intuitive, BUT (that will get on the Author's nerves :P) :
- The real ellipsis sign is NOT three dots, it's the single character ANSI #133 (supported in the default Microsoft Sans Serif font).
Ellipsis :
3 dots : ...
- It's smaller… Well, that isn't true with all fonts (Paul Vansumsen tested that), but it could help in making the strings shorter and it's worth a try

I use Tahoma 9 and it all fits fine using that. I am using 1680x1050 (WS) for a resolution, though.
chmod a+x /bin/laden -- Allows anyone the permission to execute /bin/laden

How do I un-overwrite all my data?

I can.
(Vista aero, TC7.50a fresh.ini)

 Use the mouse to open the "Net -> FTP Connect ..." dialog!

Related system setting:

Vista: Control Panel -> Ease of Access Center -> Make the keyboard easier to use:
[_] underline keyboard shortcuts and access keys

XP: AFAIR somewhere under "Display properties" ...

XP: AFAIR somewhere under "Display properties" ...
It is: Control Panel -> Screen -> Appearance -> Effects -> "Hide underlined letters for keyboard navigation until I press the Alt key" as pointed several times through the years: http://ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?p=18983#18983 and http://ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?p=118131#118131

But maybe that is not what Sam_Zen was complaining about when he wrote:
lost the lower strokes of some letters
Maybe has was just referring to missing descenders http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Descender - although both p and y shows correctly in his picture http://i45.tinypic.com/dmy4c4.png

I was indeed referring to missing descenders (I didn't know the right word).
Resolution is at 1600x900 by the way, using a classic theme.
