However if you have a lot of sub-directories and a lot of files in the same directory, to search only the current directory's files you have to find the first file and select to the end. This is quite a bit of typing as compared to clicking a "Don't recurse through subdirectories" button.

Not at all, if you don't have the Select All command to select directories too, a simple Ctrl+Gray+ should do the trick.
Otherwise select the first directory, then press Ctrl+Gray+ followed by Alt+Gray-.

Of all the planets I've been to, this one is my favorite.
A lot of good ideas, but they require too much thinking. When I want to find a file I press A+F7 immediately, then I have to stop and say, wait, I only want the current directory, escape out, type some selection keys, and then find again. It's just not intuitive, like "don't recurse thru subdirs" would be.
