We can't ban anyone. :) However, if you really want alternating background colors or gridlines, I'd suggest to keep the discussion on topic. You may want to request a feature next time and find five off-topic replies about beer and free opera licences in response.

Then, back to the topic, I'm not a big fan of gridlines. But as some people requested it, I think it should be at least optional.

The things related to gridlines that I would like to see on totalcmd are:
  • Alternating background colors for every line.
  • Customizable background colors for active/inactive panel.
So in the configuration dialog, I would add color selection dialogs for active panel background, inactive panel background, and alternate line background.

So alternate line background is common for both panels.

Customizable background colors for active/inactive panel.
Hmm... This will need some great enhancement for colors settings. The dialog will have too many controls, and to organize all of them is not a simple task (of course, if all settings will be present in the dialog). I tried to draw something, but you will see that it is too overloaded with controls. Of course, there is possibility to decrease some spaces, but it will make translation on other languages very hard or even impossible.

I drew two variants: the first one (47 Kbytes) is without different active/inactive panels differences, the second one (48 Kbytes) is with this addition.

The main principles, used in the idea of these dialogs, are:
1. The combobox near the Panel groupbox title allows to select Active/Inactive panel settings (in the second picture only). All the items that are affected by this setting are combined together in the internal groupbox; all others are not affected by changing Active/Inactive Panel etting.
2. When turning off "Use alternating background colors", the "Background 2" combobox becomes disabled, and the example becomes single-colored.
3. When turning off "Use gridlines", the "Grid color" combobox becomes disabled, and the gridlines in the example disappear.
4. I made every line of the current original example (Mark, Text, Cursor, Mark+Cursor) doubled, so that we could see how every of these lines looks on every of two possible background colors.

Concerning alternating background colors:

If the view is set to Brief (Ctrl-F1) and the number of lines in the panels is uneven - should the background color then look like the left or the right panel in this example picture: http://www.madsen.homepage.dk/tcmd/grid2.png :?:

That is about as good an argument against alternating backgrounds for brief mode as anyone would need...

I don't think so. Why existence of two possible veriants of behaviour of some feature should lead to excluding the feature from the program? On the contrary, the both possibilities should be included (as an option)!

petermad
As for me, the left variant is more suitable, because alternating colors do not specify files - they specify horizontal lines only. And the horizontal lines is what we need to distinguish, so this is absolutely not a trouble that two files (for example, smalle.fon and shruti.ttf on your screenshot) have the same background color - they don't need different colors to be easily distinguished.
And the second variant (on the richt panel) looks worse and harder to perceive.

Hi there,

Can someone tell me how to activate grid lines in Total Commander ? I'm currently in the process of choosing file manager for our company and I'm almost convinced to order Total Commander, but I don't know how to activate it (it is one of our requirements) ? In all other file managers we tested there is an easy option to enable it. Can you tell me how to activate it in TC ?

"Configuration" -> "Options..." -> "Color" -> "Background 2": choose a color that differs fom "Background".

If Background is "255 255 255" is suggest something like "240 240 240" for BAckground 2.
