Windows 7 problems
Hi,
I just updated my windows 7 with all update packages and total commander is not working at all. In fact I am not able to start it(it appears in the task manager and, before start, the process is kill).
I tried to run is as administrator(anyway I have admin rights on my account) or to run it in compatibility mode(winXP SP2/SP3) but it didn't start.
I have avast antivirus installed, but I don't think that this is the problem because I disabled antivirus before start TotalCommander.
Have anyone a solution to this issue? Thanks.

Hello, dand1234.
What do you mean by
Suggested steps:
Have you tried launching Total Commander using a clean INI file perhaps? Does it exit right after having been started then as well? If T.C. can be run using a clean INI file the source of your problem may be a malfunctioning T.C. plugin e.g.
Personally, I am using Total Commander 7.56a on
+ Windows 7 Enterprise, 32-bit, latest updates, but no SP1
+ Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit, latest updates, but no SP1
without experiencing any problems like the one that you reported.
Therefore, more details (see above) will be needed in order to find out what causes your problem.
Kind regards,
Karl
So your current Windows version is Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1, 32-bit?I just updated my windows 7 with all update packages
Launching Total Commander in any kind of compatibility mode is neither required, nor helpful in 99,9% of all cases.compatibility mode(winXP SP2/SP3)
Running Total Commander in elevated mode is not required in most cases.I tried to run is as administrator(anyway I have admin rights on my account)
What do you mean by
Have you switched off UAC? Or do you mean the account is a member of the administrator group, but whenever appropriate Windows 7 will ask for your consent before running anything in elevated mode?I have admin rights on my account
This is not required in order to launch Total Commander.I disabled antivirus before start TotalCommander
I am afraid the answer may be "Sorry, no, not yet, because so far we have not learnt what the source of your problem might be."Have anyone a solution to this issue?
Suggested steps:
Have you had a look at the Windows eventlogs perhaps in order to find out whether Windows logs an error message about Total Commander? In fact I am not able to start it(it appears in the task manager and, before start, the process is kill).

Hi Karl,
First of all thanks for your fast answer. I have windows 7 Home, 32 bit + SP1. Total Commander worked excellent before SP1 update. After the update it didn't start(it only apperas in task manager few seconds and then the process is killed).
I disabled UAC, antivirus, I tried to run it in Admin mode and it didn't works.
I tried to install other file managers(i.e. nexus file,. free commander etc) and they are not working(the same symptoms).
I think that is a shell problem. Probably Microsoft changed something in shell api, or added some supplementary protections. There is no other explanation to this strange behavior.

Hello, dand1234.
Thanks for the additional details. - Oops. - This seems to promise that Windows 7 SP1 users will be experiencing more fun in the near future.
Also cf. this thread which seems to be about the same problem.
Hopefully Microsoft will provide a solution (hotfix?!) before my company starts rolling out SP1 ...
In other words, I have not got a clue what the source of the problem may be and how to fix it.
Have a nice weekend nevertheless.

I'm running Windows 7 SP1 for more than one month on two Ultimate x64 installations without any problems.karlchen wrote:This seems to promise that Windows 7 SP1 users will be experiencing more fun in the near future.
There must be another reason.dand1234 wrote:Probably Microsoft changed something in shell api, or added some supplementary protections
Maybe a tool which interact at a very low level with the system or installed some hooks in every running instance is incompatible with SP1.
One possible reason could be a icon shell extension which crashes under win7 SP1.
This may explain why primarily file manager are affected:

You may try to edit wincmd.ini and add a line with ShellExtIcons=0 in the [Configuration] section.
If this helps Nirsoft ShellExView can be used to disable specific Icon-Handlers.
- start "shexview.exe"
(on x64 operation systems "shexview.exe /wow64" is needed to handle 32Bit handlers )
- mark all handlers of typ "Icon Handler"
(you may skip those from Microsoft, these handlers are most of the time OK)
- context menu "Disable Selected Items F7"
- start TC again
If this helps, you can try to enable the Icon-handlers step by step until TC crashes again.
Don't forget to post the name of the Icon-handler here (may help other users with the same problem).

Holger
Cleanup
I'd advise some basic housekeeping. Get CCleaner, leave a tip, reboot, and run it within your desktop/user-login. Clean up file detritus and then let it examine the registry with its cleaner. Accept the offer to backup the entries it finds before you delete them - always a wise option, IMO. CCleaner is a mild registry scrubber.dand1234 wrote:Hi HolgerK,
Thanks for your help. Unfortunately, I was not able to fix my TC. I verified that I have only Microsoft icon handlers, so my problems are not coming from here...
Anyway, it's interesting that I don't see anything special in Windows' logs (Application, System or Security).
...
It is really curious. Now my TC works in Win 7... I haven't installed any application or system update.
But I have another issue: in order to delete a file I have to wait 1-3 minutes...
TC is normally very well-behaved in all Windows environments.
(PS More expansive thread title, please.)
Try to use Sysinternals Autoruns to check what is loading at system and application start. Also, enable signature checking.

Try to empty the recycle bin. If this doesn't help, addto delete a file I have to wait 1-3 minutes
VistaDelete=1
to wincmd.ini section [Configuration]. Works with Windows Vista and later only.
