Remeber dialog settings

Post by *jarekf »

I use Total Commander a lot, and I would very much like to see an improvement so that dialogs remember previous settings.

For example, I often search a text in files. Each time I open the dialog, I have to again check the box to search the text, why no remember the last setting?

Another example - folder synchronization. It remembers some settings, but not all, for example doesn't remember the extension of the file.

I would appreciate a lot if that could be improved.

Thanks!

When you check 'find text' checkbox, TC puts cursor into text edit field so you may enter text immediately. If checkbox will be checked, you will need to put cursor into that field only by mouse. So, anyway you need a click to set focus - it doesn't matter what you click - checkbox or edit field. Also, you may use checkbox's shortcut key to enable edit field and activate it for entering text to find - just press Alt+T (t letter is underlined in Find text: string). But you couldn't activate edit field using single Alt+T press if checkbox will be enabled when you open search dialog.

Anyway, you may enter some text to search and then save search preset, and create a buttonbar button that loads that preset - just use command LOADSEARCH with saved preset name as parameter.

You may save sync preset in sync window too, then use SYNCOPEN commad to open sync window and load saved preset.

Why can't the checkbox state be remembered, so that it is the same state as the last time I closed the dialog?

Many other values (e.g. the last text) on the dialog are remembered, but not this one. If someone is using this option once, then there is a good chance he will use it again, and with similar or the same settings.

My point is: all dialog fields should be remembered, not just some.

Your suggestion with presets it too complicated for practical use.

If checkbox will be checked, you will need to put cursor into that field only by mouse.
The cursor could be put there automatically IF the checkbox was/is checked now.

Very often I search for the same phrase, and each time I have to select this checkbox. It would be easier and more logical to remember it.

I think it would be great if TC will save exact search/sync options (all checkboxes, plugins, masks) into some preset with special name (e.g. Last Used) every time when user closes find/sync dialog. So, if some user wants to keep previous settings, he may use buttons/usercommands LOADSEARCH Last Used and SYNCOPEN Last Used instead of basic buttons/commands that open find/sync dialogs (or maybe even assign defult hotkey Alt+F7 for such command). So all other users won't get any troubles with it.

I tend to agree with you; all options should be remembered, not just certain ones. That would be more consistent.
