Big 2003/2004 TC boom now over?

Post by *chrizoo »

.
This might just be a wrong impression, but when browsing through the plugins on www.totalcmd.net it seems to me that the majority has been last updated in either 2003 or 2004. Can you think of any possible reasons which would explain why plugin development has peaked at that time and appears to have faded afterwards?

I'm still very happy with TC sales, so it's certainly not because of missing interest. There are just so many plugins which cover a wide range of functions that it's difficult to write something which doesn't exist yet (and which isn't too difficult either). I'm using some very old plugins myself, and they just do what I need...

Totally agree.

I don't.
I see many, many things that can't be done (or can't be done well) with TC currently and that could be fixed with plugins. Though certainly these things are much less important than i.e. image preview.

Mh can you give some examples?
I see many improvements TC itself should introduce (i.e. redesign BTM [move to tab, overall progress bar, improved arranging of items], dynamic Thumbnail size, customize hotkeys in lister and synchronize directories) but they could not or should not be implemented as plugin. (IMO)

There is no good text viewer with syntax highlighting. All are slow and the fastest one (scilister) is not configurable at all.
There is no good lister for audio files, number of supported formats is low
There is not trid wdx (I wrote one, but it was one of the worst plugins ever, so even I stopped using it quickly)
Multimedia support in wdx is bad. There are quite a few plugins that patch pieces of the vast field, but not everything is covered, i.e. video resolution. Please note that I ignore media.wdx, because it's not significantly better than trid.wdx.
No write support for tags / image metadata etc.

That's just 5 minutes of thought, if I really wanted, I'd find way more.

m^2,

Well, it certainly is useful to me. :)

Mal angenommen, du drückst Strg+F, wählst die FTP-Verbindung (mit gespeichertem Passwort), klickst aber nicht auf Verbinden, sondern fällst tot um.

jpg-comment works for my needs but still - IIRC - there are only 3 plugins with write support (could be 4 but you ignore media). Well, you can also complain about files comparison* feature implementation in WDXes. I think only Lefteous coded it.

*) Significant lack of features first drove me to WinMerge followed with Beyond Compare.
