RFE: http based links

Post by *oden »

RFE (request for enhancement)

Hi Christian, list.

I would love a feature that enables tc load links in the buttonbar (and in the menues) in the form like this:

http://my.server.com/my/apps/my_cool_app.exe

Now it acts like this:

D:\my\apps\my_cool_app.exe

Cheers.

Possible...

Post by *Clo »

:D   Hello!
You can already get a Web address / page placing an *.URL file as a button...
• Then, reaching an executable file seems me risky, because the malwares and so you could launch like this...
 Kind regards

Yes I see.

I guess I should have explained more what I wanted to achieve.

I recently got a temporary employment supporting w95(950a/b) - w2k computers at some schools. I would like to run tc totally from a http server location because this way I would not have to have tc installed in the computers I fiddle with. I cannot use it from a ms / novell share because of firewalls, different locations etc.

Is this possible as is?

USB-stick is the ticket

:D  Hello!
• But my mistake, you could run TC in any PC you use from an USB-stick - under Win2K only, of course...- The wincmd.ini and the wcx_ftp.ini files must be adapted, but it's so easy to do.
• Under Win 95:   ! Only remains the old good ... diskette, but how slow it's!

• Most certainly, one can launch an executable from a HTTP server, but I doubt it could be used then with the full functions of TC... ?
¤ We have to hope that Ch. Ghisler watches this topic... Whether he doesn't, I could send a short note to him?
  Kind regards,
Clo

USB is nice but that requires that you have the support for it.

There could be a way if I made a package out of it that loads a ramdisk and puts tc on it. When done just unload the ramdisk.

But I need to find a ramdisk driver that is free and can be loaded/unloaded at will.

Also I need to find a installer that is free and won't show up in the "Add/Remove packages" thing in the control panel.

Ahh..., this was too complicated...

What if I first put the settings from the wincmd.ini file in the registry and then load tc? It won't find my key though..., unless I can point to a remote key... It would work with a cracked tc though;)

Please notify Christian about these ideas.

Cheers.

2oden: You can run TC from floppy, USB-stick or CD without any need of installation !

That is the main advantage of TC !

No file or registry entry needed on the foreign PC.
I often use it that way :D

Just copy your TC folder (incl. WINCMD.INI and WINCMD.KEY) to the medium of your choice and it will run.
Sure, on a floppy you have to keep away from most plugins due to less diskspace.

On a CD or USB-stick you should use LaunchTC by Lefteous, to cover the always changing driveletter on different PCs.

Try it and you will have your most powerful tool always with you :!:

I think also that you should try launchTC by lefteous. When you use %commander_path% variable and relative path you can start all your favourite tools from within TC.

What settings? Are you talking about mapping WINCMD.INI to registry? What for than?

Well, I can't see your problem in general, but you can point to a remote key:

_________transmission_from_TOTALCMD.HLP___________

[Configuration]

KeyPath= Path to the registration key (WITHOUT the file name!). As a default, Total Commander looks for the key in its own directory. Useful if key cannot be read over a LAN.

_______________end_of_transmission________________[/face]

Thank you all.

But I see this topic drifted off some. Here's the specs again:

* I want to start TC from a webserver.
* I want tools/functions in the menus/buttonbar load from a webserver if nessesary.
* I want TC to use my key loaded from the webserver.
* I want this transparent.

I can't/won't use any LAN sharing such as MS/Novell DS, I stated why. This has _nothing_ to do with removable media such as USB, floppy, CDROM, or what have you.

Thanks in advance.

I suggest again: Try Lefteous LaunchTC. There you can specify relative paths to the start path. I cannot try it by myself, because I've got no webserver running. But I tried it through network. I started TC with LaunchTC through the UNC- Connection in my Network - and could access all remote installed progs via buttonbar ( of course I used %commander_path% variable to point to my applicazions).
