Program too big to fit in memory.

Post by *MelOrecklin »

I have recently downloaded a number of .exe files from Kazaa. When they are run (for example in a .cmd window), I get the error "Program too big to fit in memory".

This is clearly not a Total Commander problem, but the MS Knowledgebase or a Google searche has not helped. I have run a virus check to make sure that is not the problem.

Perhaps someone here can assist.

I think the files are just corrupted.

But just curious:
What OS are you using (win98/NT/...)
Are the exe files for Windows/DOS/... ?
How big are they (filesize) ?
How much memory do you have (RAM) ?
Do you have Virual Memory turned on/off ?
If on: How big is your paging file (winNT+) or swapfile (win9x)?
...BRB...

What OS are you using (win98/NT/...)
Win XP Professional

Are the exe files for Windows/DOS/... ?
They are Windows programs, but I expect that they are zipped into a self extracting .exe.

How big are they (filesize) ?
Larger than 10MB

How much memory do you have (RAM) ?
512MB

Do you have Virual Memory turned on/off ?
Windows XP is in the default condition. I have not modified any memory parameters.

If on: How big is your paging file (winNT+) or swapfile (win9x)?
TC shows 350MB free memory (59%) and 99% free resources.

------------
I think your guess is correct. They are just corrupted files.

Thank you.

It could be your virusscanner is working in the background trying scan them at the same time. If it's a packed file, it may try to unpack it into memory.
Try turning the scanner off (at your own risk ;) )

If they are, you should be able to see their contents by pressing Ctrl-PageDown on the file in TC. If the file is corrupt, TC displays an error, or does not even go into the file.
I switched to Linux, bye and thanks for all the fish!

Not all SFX...

:D   Hello!
• I thought to this, but some SFXs can't be open - especially the "InstallShield" SFX-installers archives or similar... Ch. Ghisler told me a while ago that they are not documented, and their authors refuse to give any source...
• So, you can get an error message - or nothing, only the archive can't be open with Ctrl+Page Down-...
   Kind regards,
Claude

You should be very careful - recent research has shown that about 50% of all EXEs on Kazaa contain worms, so use a good virus scanner!
