If you use two or more custom columns in different folder tabs (in one panel) and switch between them the width of fields is resetted.
Here are steps to reproduce with clean ini:
1. Start TC with clean ini.
2. Create two new custom columns (Show -> Custom Column Mode -> Configure custom columns)
---1st one by New -> Add column -> + -> tc -> fullname -> OK;
---2nd one by New -> Add column -> + -> tc -> path -> OK -> OK)
3. Open two new folder tab in source panel (Ctrl+T).
4. Change view mode:
---1st tab Show -> Brief
---2nd tab Show -> Custom Column Mode -> 1 fullname..
---3rd tab Show -> Custom Column Mode -> 2 path..
5. Switch to 2nd tab and change width of field "fullname" (with mouse).
6. Switch to 1st tab (Brief view) and back to 2nd tab - width of field "fullname" is preserved (from step 5).
7. Switch to 3rd tab and back to 2nd tab and width of field "fullname" is resetted.
Of course, saving position/setting before switching tabs solves it but this behaviour is strange.
Tested with TC 8.01 x32 and TC 8.01 x64 with clean ini files, OS Win 7 x64.

Indeed the custom column width is not explicitly preserved when you switch away from it, except when you save it yourself. Since TC only maintains one set of custom columns, switching do a different custom column will update the custom column widths to that custom column widths. If you switch to brief or full view and back, the custom column widths stored internally remain unchanged.
