Microsoft Surface & Windows 8 RT

Post by *btreloar »

Is there a version of Total Commander that runs on the Microsoft Surface running Windows 8 RT? If not, is one planned?

btreloar,
No and no. TC would not make sense as a Metro app and Microsoft does not support 3rd party desktop applications on Windows 8.

tc would make sense as a metro apps

Using tc on Windows 8 with touch screen is painfull.
I still hope Tc would make sense to be a metro app.

The next version of TC will use larger icons (e.g. for the drive buttons) and work better with long taps. I have a Windows 8 convertible myself and use it quite often. I have written a metro app, but I never use it - while it's a bit easier to use with fingers, it's much more limited (mainly because of the very restricted metro API).

It can do even less than the Windows CE or Android app. For example there is no user-configurable button bar because metro apps cannot launch any other programs (they can just open documents). FTP uploads are very unreliable because Microsoft's implementation of TCP sockets is flawed (no graceful disconnect!). I haven't ported any packers/unpackers so far because I have cancelled the project after the problems with FTP.

Total Commander as Metro app will be great

Post by *Hugo Olsen »

As a very long time user of Total Commander I hate to say this, but have a look a the Metro app "Metro Commander", that does on Window 8 RT what Total Commander does on Windows 8 Pro. I will use TC for RT, if the same or better functionality is provided. And I am prepared to pay for the app. By the way, you don't have to use only your fingers to operate Windows RT, it's even quicker/better with a mouse.

The question for me is why Microsoft doesn't allow native 3rd party applications on RT.

Maybe RT was only used by MS to force intel to produce processors with a lower power consumption...

TC on Windows Surface RT

Post by *nld-bso »

I totally agree with the postings above, I wish there was a TC-version that runs on Windows RT.

It may well be a light version (tc app) with no support for FTP, nor for third party software integration and with a more app-style interface.

To me a TC which is totally stripped down to a clean tc-app, is still better then the default Explorer on Windows RT... So please, can you post that very beta tc-app?

Totally agreeing with the previous writer.

I think that synchronizing function could be the most important copy/move/delete function in RT because as far as I know there is now not a single RT file manager which can do it. (Or is there any?)

This means that rubbish, which should be deleted, will begin to accumulate on the target directory tree if synchronizing function (especially mirroring) is missing.

If I could get a remote connection to Surface from desktop computer, I could use TC, but the local network connection seems to work only unilaterally: I can reach desktop computer from Surface, but not other way round. Am I right?

Disagree,
UI interface, it is for play, not for work !
TC run perfectly on desktop Win8 PRO.
Wait to see if "UI/RT" has a future...

OK, i confess, i don't like UI :?
Be happy !
