Double Click to Launch?

Post by *Rhywun »

When I double-click a file name, the associated program does not open anymore--in fact nothing happens, except sometimes I see an hourglass very briefly. I believe this happened right after I upgraded to 6.02. Any ideas? Thanks.

well, what kind of files are you trying to start? I doubt that TC is responsible for that behavior ;)

:)  Hi again !
• I recommend you to download the official archive of TC 6.02 at ghisler.com , then to reinstall it from that archive. None user had that problem (and the other you tell in another thread!)

• I guess you updated TC from an archive either unofficial, or damaged a bit, or both ?

Do you get the same behaviour when run from within Explorer or not?

I sometimes get the same behaviour (with the hourglass) after trying to execute an application that has crushed but is already resident in the memory. Of course this is totally a Windows behaviour and not TC's.

Since in my case the problem is related to memory and as an extension processes transparent to the user try to check also if an antivirus software or something else running in the background can be causing a problem.

Finally, check if TC has lost its file association with the file type you are trying to open although I don't think that's the problem because you don't get the hourglass in the latter case.

Update archive

Post by *Clo »

:)   Hi Panos !
Rhywun has another problem with his update to 6.02...
that nobody had.
• However, without such an update (archive) problem, you're right: with too low resourses and / or / free memory, it becomes impossible to launch programs, even from an icon on the Desktop.

Claude

I updated from the official archive - I am not aware of any other.

BUT, I had messed around with my earlier installation a little, by putting the icons, buttonbar files, menu files, and plugins each in a separate directory, because I was having GREAT difficulty keeping track of the various file types when they were all together. However, the .ini file seems to reference everything correctly, so.... I don't know.

I do know it's not a Windows issue.

Well, I backed up the old installation and did a fresh install. Everything works as it should. Except then I lose a LOT of work that I did on customization. Does anyone know of a config setting that might have caused the problems I had (esp. that I could not launch programs)? Would it help to post the .ini file?

Update TC..

Post by *Clo »

2Rhywun
:)   Hello !
• I rarely reinstall the whole TC for updates... Since I've a small LAN at home, I just change the files to update using another copy / old TC-version from another PC...
- To recognize easily the TC-files, I created special types, like *.bar, *.inc and so on. I drawn explicit icons for this, available for free from my Web page below >> TC-Page >> English
- I keep backups in a sub-dir, but in the TC-dir to shorten the path.
- I've another sub-dir for plugins, in which each one is kept in its own folder...
• For a simple version-update, isn't necessary to use all backups: the settings are saved automatically. Only the language-file & menu could be overwritten, that isn't a problem for you normally (default is English), but it's one for me, since I've customized menus in French, plus some other translated files.
- The button-bar(s) remain(s) untouched, like you had in the previous version.
• It's better to have the <wincmd.ini> file in the TC-dir directly.
- With regard to the odd problems you had, yes, it could be useful for the Author and we to watch your <wincmd.ini> file.

Claude

I swapped in the old executable into my modified program directory and the problems are still there - so I am thinking now that the upgrade is not the cause of the problems.

Here is my ini file if you would be kind enough to take a look and see if anything looks suspicious :-)

Remove RestrictInterface=161

From help:

Code: Select all

RestrictInterface=	Disable parts of the user interface. Just build the sum of the following options:
1=Start menu
2=Command line
4=Buttonbar change
8=Drive right click menu
16=File right click menu
32=Directory hotlist change
64=FTP (CTRL+N, CTRL+F)
128=ENTER key (run programs, open files)
256=File system plugins
Your directory hotlist problem wil be solved too :lol:

That's exactly it! Here is what I think happened. I am using the TweakTC plugin, which I used to disable some of the features that I don't use at work (FTP, Start Menu, and Command Line) except instead I lost the hotlist config, the ENTER key and some other thing that I didn't miss :-)

Must be a bug with TweakTC - Anyway many thanks to everyone who helped!!!! :D

Thanks for offering it :-)
But I'm not using it anymore :-(
Instead I have created my own -- based on SpeedCommander actually... cos I think it's got the most logical arrangement of commands I've seen. It's not quite finished but I was thinking of posting somewhere if anyone else was interested.

Of course we are interested. My menu is far from perfect. My task though is
to come as close as possible to perfection. So, I'm open to any alternative
solutions that I can get ideas from.

I'll be waiting... ;)

PS: Quite soon I'll be releasing a new update for the upcoming v6.50 of TC. It's
actually 99% ready. I'm just waiting for the official release by Christian.
