Command line opening directory in Windows Explorer

Post by *MrPetersen »

The command line does not seem to be functioning properly. Sometimes it will do what I ask and simply change directory within the currently active pane and sometimes it will open the directory in Windows Explorer. This has been rather irritating and I assume there's a somewhat easy fix.

Also: When I hit the Decimal on my Numerical Pad before hitting Enter it also opens the folder in WE.

I appreciate the help.
Thanks.

If you just type the name of an existing directory and hit enter, then the dirertory will be opened in Explorer.

If you type cd [space] and the name of an existing directory then TC will go into that directory.
When I hit the Decimal on my Numerical Pad before hitting Enter it also opens the folder in WE.
What key is decimal key excatly is that, and is num-lock active or not ?

It is the dot
Ahh - On a Danish (Scandinavian) keyboard it is a comma [,] (when num-lock is on - otherwise Del)

ts4242: OK thanks the cd[space] trick works.

Any chance you can explain to me exactly why it has to work that way? I don't understand.

And is there any way to change this? I don't have much need for Explorer.

Thanks

Well, it is a command line and cd is a command, whereas the name of a folder isn't - it is just an extra feature that a folder is opened in Explorer when just writing the foldername.

If you don't want to type cd + space, then I suggest that you use the Quick search to go to the folder:

Go into "Configuration" -> "Options..." -> "Quick Search" and choose: "Letters - with search dialog" or "Letters only".

Now in the file list, when in the top of it, you can just start typing the name of the folder and the cursor will automatically jump to it, whereafter you can press Enter to go into the folder.

If you have a file that starts with the same name as the folder, and you are not in top of the list when you start typing, you might have to press arrow-up to jump to the folder.

The Total Commander command line basically does the same as Windows Run. If you run a program, the program is started. If you run a document, the associated program is started. If you run a folder, the associated program (Explorer) is started.

The cd command is an exception and is handled internally by Total Commander.
