Enabling Quick View for Office documents, PDFs, tiffs, etc.

Post by *JohnTC »

Hi, what's the best solution these days to implementing Quick View for Office documents, PDFs, tiffs, etc.

Any thoughts anyone would like to share on the topic?

thanks

I don't think there is a "best" solution.
There are some old plugins which can view office files e.g. Office 1.1 and ListDoc,
but they all have some problems viewing modern XML-based office formats (.odX files and similar).

If you want some universal lister plugin for QuickView which supports basically all office files, uLister is probably the best choice for now.
Some disadvantages with that plugin:
  • You need to download the Oracle OiT Framework, and probably need to register for that
  • It also depends on some runtime DLLs which must be installed (you can patch the files though, but it's quite a work)
  • You need to configure an Ini file to exclude some file formats, because otherwise uLister tries to open basically all files that it supports, including zip and rar files
The plugin also supports most image formats, including Tif(f), though I prefer viewing image files with Imagine, it seems to be a lot faster and looks way better, but it's your choice.
As for PDF, you are probably best adviced to use a separate plugin for that.
uLister can also open them, but nor really comfortable IMO.
I would recommend sLister for Lister, and the old Sumatra plugin for Thumbnails/Previews.
TC plugins: PCREsearch and RegXtract

I will not add anything above the detailed response of Milo1012..

ULister is an heavy thing but works as expected in many case ! I'm also using MultiLister/pdfFilter but it is even more tricky to setup and basically not for QuickView.

Thanks for the replies, sorry it took me so long to close the loop.

So: uLister, Imagine, sLister, Sumatra plug-in.

thanks again
