And how do you get your security updates from Windows Update Catalog ? Or better how do you find out wich updates your PC needs? Or do you refrain from update your windows?

To all:
Club Total is back with a temporary site.

I haven't got time to bug fix the old CMS I was using, so I'm opening the site up using the "Open Dir" principle.

Basically, that means you can just grab what you want from the directory listing. You can sort the listing by date to find updated files or use the search option to find something specific.

I've uploaded everything from scratch from my own home collection. Some local files could possibly have been infected by the hacking, besides the old database had many links to files on the authors websites. But this means some filenames are not the original. They were edited to make them a bit more descriptive.

Enjoy.

Maybe faster?

:)  Hello !
ezTrust Antivirus has deleted this virus correctly
• That sounds nice ! However, maybe is it faster to delete the virus using the eraser-program quoted above, instead to launch another scanning ?
* In order to make its using easier, I rebuilt its Help as HTML, and translated it into English. Hence, we have now a Help template, translatable in any language - not very big, the program is simple to use -.
* Available from :
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/charries/relais/patching.htm#eraser >>> eraser-head-help-aide.zip
{ Apart : your message allowed me to find a minor bug in that eraser, so its Author fixed it immediatly, he's a fast Author ! }
 Kind regards,
Claude

Nice to see your site back again. I think it's easy enough to find anything you desire. Personally I prefer this kind of search - like browsing through my HD. The only thing I miss a bit are the good descriptions.

Thanks to you

My strategy to keep my (private) computer clean:

- I read the security bulletins regularly and adjust my IPSec configuration if a new Worm/Virus starts to spread itself through open ports.

- I disabled all services that aren't absolutely needed.

- I'm running an up-to-date virus scanner.

- I disabled the Windows Network Client for my Internet Connection as well as the Windows Shares on the Network connection (actually I don't have any shares on my computer except for the admin shares)

- I don't execute any programs that are attached to mails (actually most of the virus mails are identified as Spam by Mozilla anyway)

- And I don't use Internet Exploret or Outlook.

My system is up and running for 4 years now, and I have never had a single virus, worm or dialer on my system.
I never had to re-install it, and I never had a bluescreen or unwanted shutdown (except once during installation when I hit a bad driver for my Iomega ZIP drive)

As a matter of fact I'm still running SP2 for my W2K :)

Thats not possible if you are running a network
- And I don't use Internet Exploret or Outlook.
Though there are some internet sites you cannot access.

At least you haven't noticed any :P

I think it is a good strategy but it's not always an for everyone possible to use.

I haven't had a virus either, for longer than TC exists (more than 11 years). My strategy:
- never run any attachments received by e-mail
- always use viewers for attachments, not the actual programs, so use wordview for .doc, xlview for .xls etc.
- use Mozilla Firefox for web browsing
- use a non-standard mail program (akmail) and don't use HTML view
- use 2 firewalls: a NAT router with firewall separating the internal net from the internet, and a software firewall on all PCs
- use a background virus scanner with auto-updates
- always install the latest patches for the system

Wow! Christian you are really protected! ;)

But I guess that's an expensive solution for Maxwish, isn't it?

Only the NAT firewall is a bit expensive, although they have come down in price quite a lot - try e.g. the SMC Barricade series (no, I don't have one of these).

- The wordview+xlview viewers are free
- Mozilla is free
- Eudora exists in a free version, as well as Mozilla Mail
- There are free personal firewalls like ZoneAlarm
- Windows patches are free
- there are also some free virus scanners

So the cost cannot be an excuse. :)

The Word Viewer is a bit outdated and doesn't seem to open Office XP/2003 documents. What do you use for those? I was thinking about using Open Office, but I am not sure if that actually offers better protection against logic bombs than Word does.

There are some free Firewall+Nat alternatives if you have an old PC lying around. Just add 2 Ethernet cards and boot one of these apps:

Gnatbox Light (http://www.gta.com)
FreeBSD based Firewall+NAT
Runs on old 486 + 16mb ram + 2 Ethernet cards.
Boots from a floppy (no hard disk needed).
Has been providing my home* network for a years :)

Smoothwall (http://www.smoothwall.org/)
Linux based. Is a larger than Gnatbox so runs from bootable CD or Harddrive.
You can add extra features (like IDS, server) to the basic firewall+Nat if your hardware allows it (depends on memory, CPU, disk space).

Freesco (http://www.freesco.org/)
Also floppy based. Runs withas little as 6mb RAM

BTW:
To make things clear about the Club Total-virus thingy. CT is not hosted by me at home but at FREE.FR. So neither the server nor I was hacked. I was using this crap PHP CMS system (phpnuke) and that got hacked. The hacker injected some code that loaded the virus and porn banners from another sites. All Russian BTW.

Some people already warned me that phpnuke was a security disaster but it was pretty easy to work with and easy to change to fit my needs. The last few weeks, I became sloppy with installing the latest code fixes, so I guess the hacked exploited one of those. Never mind, I not using it ever again!

I haven't received any Office 2003 docs so far, so it hasn't been a problem yet. Maybe you can use the OfficeView plugin? It uses Microsoft's office converters to convert the viewed files to RTF, but doesn't execute any scripts, so it should be safe - Microsoft's Office viewer probably uses similar code...
