[TC9.0b7] Install dialog when run Everything as admin

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

[TC9.0b7] Install dialog when run Everything as admin

Post by *jvh »

Preconditions:
- Everything placed in same folder as TC or defined path in wincmd.ini Everything=...
- Enabled option "Run as admin" in Everything settings or Everything.exe -startup -admin in wincmd.ini
- Everything not running yet

1. In TC start Search (Alt+F7 or Alt+Shift+F7).
2. Check the 'Everything' checkbox.
3. UAC asks for permissions, click Yes.
4. Now is Everything running correctly in background but...
5. TC shows dialog: ...Everything isn't installed! Do you want to download it now?
6. Close install dialog and checkbox 'Everything' isn't checked.

If you check this checkbox again all is working as expected.

Regardless of this install problem.
Using the Everything service eleminates the need for running as Admin
and doesn't open a security problem if files or programs are started from the Everything GUI results if it runs as Admin.
Windows 11 Home, Version 24H2 (OS Build 26100.4061)
TC 11.55 RC2 x64 / x86
Everything 1.5.0.1391a (x64), Everything Toolbar 1.5.2.0, Listary Pro 6.3.2.88
QAP 11.6.4.4 x64

That's right. But sometimes "Run as admin" feature is very useful, e.g. for portable TC...

It's a problem with the Everything API Everything32.dll/Everything64.dll. It seems that it cannot find Everything running as admin.
