searching for dupe foldernames, searching for empty folders

Post by *sybariten »

Since people are so alert here;
Does anyone have any good ideas on how to do the following. I have a folder that contains, say 4 folders. They in turn contain lots of folders with peoples names. Some people have stuff in both, say, folder 2 and 4. So, when i move stuff from 2/Johnny to 4/Johnny, i get an empty folder. I also have two folders called Johnny.

Is there any way to search for this ?

All the best / J

As far as I know there is no feature build into TC to search for empty folders. If I were you I would have probably followed the following method:

1. Alt+F7 on the root of your concerning folder tree
2. Type in the “Search for:” field: Johnny
3. Perform the searching
4. Then click Feed to listbox
5. And switch to Quick View Mode on that list (Ctrl+Q)
6. Observe the details on the opposite side to locate the empty folders
7. Select the desirable ones for deletion

Unfortunately for lists feed from a search result Alt+Shift+Enter is not possible which could have made this much easier to locate the empty ones in one go.

Of course that’s not the only or the best solution. That’s the solution I can think of until (or if) your suggested feature is implemented.

What the heck..... what is this quick view mode really about? Previewing stuff? I must admit that i've totally missed this one. Looks sweet.

Thanks for your ideas!

It is possible! Seems that you're going to discover one more new feature, Panos... :)

Moreover, sybariten, you can then sort the list by size (be sure to set "Sorting directories" to "Like files" in Configuration|Display; if you need to change this option often, create button or menu item with cm_SwitchDirSort command) and all empty folders will be at the bottom.

BTW, I added new functionality to my TreeCopy plugin to easily delete empty folders (and called it TreeClean). I'll try to post it soon.

Well, how? It doesn’t work for me. What do I do wrong?

When I feed the list and press Alt+Shift+Enter TC does nothing! :(

Waiting for TreeClean! ;)

Weel, After pressing Alt+Shift+Enter at the bottom of the panel you can see size of each directory.
And when you have sorting directories like files on - they can be sorted.

I knew that! I though that what was meant was displaying the size on the filelist as Alt+Shift+Enter usually behaves.

I didn’t suggest that since it’s similar to the Quick View for the suggested problem but with fewer details. On the other hand I missed out the possibility of automatic sorting which can be more useful in the current situation. Thanks!

looking for empty folders

Post by *sybariten »

Well, personally i didnt know about the ctrl-shift-enter thing before... what's it called? I remember thinking numerous times, that "man it would be good if i could get the dirsize of all the dirs in this dir, in one go instead of having to press space for each of them" ... :) And, as you might have read, i didnt know about ctrl-q either.
Thanks guys!

Command Line: Keys
==================

If Total Commander is active, nearly all keyboard input is directed to the command line.
Here the layout for some keys:

ENTER The command line is executed, if it contains at least one character
(otherwise, the program under the cursor in the source window is started).
If the command is cd, md or rd, it is executed internally. If it is an
internal DOS command, DOS will be executed with this command. Otherwise,
a program with the given name is executed.
SHIFT-ENTER Like ENTER, but with preceding command /c. After the called DOS program
is terminated, its window is not automatically closed. This will only
work if the file noclose.pif is in your windows directory.
CTRL-ENTER The file under the cursor in the source directory is appended to the
command line.
CTRL-SHIFT-ENTER The file under the cursor including its path is appended to the command
line.
CTRL-CURSORDOWN or A list with the latest command lines (history-list) is opened. Hold down
ALT+F8 the CTRL key and use the up and down cursor keys to select an entry. By
pressing the left or right key, you can edit the command line. This
automatically closes the list.
TAB or Cursor Keys Puts the cursor back to the source directory. Cursor left and cursor
right move the cursor through the command line, even if the cursor was
in the source directory before. If brief was selected, these keys move
the cursor through the source directory. You then have to hold down
SHIFT to move it inside the command line. Cursor up and cursor down
move the cursor bar inside the source window, even if it was inside
the command line.
ESC or CTRL+Y Clears the command line
CTRL+C (32 bit) Copy selected text to clipboard
CTRL+X (32 bit) Cut selected text to clipboard
CTRL+V (32 bit) Paste text from clipboard to command line.
CTRL+K Delete to end of line
CTRL+W Delete word to the left of the cursor
CTRL+T Delete word to the right of the cursor
