TC freezes on Windows 10 Creators Update

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

problems with windows 10 creator update

Post by *icu2l8 »

Yes, I also use Nvidia, although the problem seems to be connected to the USB driver of the creator update that maybe is faulty to my opinion, and making lags.
There is no problem with former total commander 8.51a, only with 9.0a.
But the 8.51a got bugs with the UHD monitor, so can't go back.
Maybe all will be solved with the next Nvidia update.
Installed the fix... and still bugged.

TC freezes on Windows 10 Creators Update

Post by *icu2l8 »

After updating nvidia drivers to the latest yesterday, and also updating the creator update, the flickering problem with the 9.0a did not disappearing.

Just gave up on understanding why, and went back to 8.52a... works faster, smother, without any flickering.

TC freezes on Windows 10 Creators Update

Post by *icu2l8 »

After trying again and searching I found out that my font DPI was set to 360... which is probably illegal... how it was set to 360... when the max is 300... only god knows... but that solved all the flickering and everything on 9.0a.

Please check if you have set restrictions to the font dpi values !

The dialog box scaling causing all the problems... just unmark it.

Nice to hear that! Did you also have the memory dump problems user siealex reported in this thread?

First thing I did was to disable this service... I maybe also need to disable windows defender :)

If anyone still has this problem, I would be very grateful if you could upload one(!) of the memory dumps somewhere and send me the link to support at ghisler dot com, or analyze it yourself with windbg.

Hmm, another freeze after a month. No crash, TC was almost unresponsive. For me, the workaround "disable icons, restart TC, enable icons" still works. Is there anything what I can do to be more helpful?

1) May be this is an incompatibility between an explorer extension and TC 9.
You may try nirsoft shellexview (for 32bit TC use commandline shexview.exe /wow64) to disable all extensions of type "Icon Handler" except those from Microsoft.

2) "Options->Icons: [x] Show default folder/file Icons from Explorer" is a new feature in TC9 which wasn't available in TC8.52a.
Does also it freeze if you disable this option?

Thanks. I preventively disabled all nonMS extensions of type "Icon Handler" (two in total). I have no idea how to reproduce this issue.

Please use "whatishang" when TC is hanging again:
