Thanks for your offer. I would like to leave the possibly examination to the author.

Could you perhaps have redirected one or more of these sections in your wincmd.ini for TC 9.x: [left], [right], [lefttabs] of [righttabs] to a file that is no longer writeable?

Have you tried using your wincmd.ini from your TC 8.52a TC with yor TC 9.x ?
No, I have no redirections in wincmd.ini.
I always use the same wincmd.ini, that's just the strange thing.
TC is used on the PC with portable settings (UseIniInProgramDir=7).

Thank you for the hint to [left],... that motivated me to take new tests - with success!

After each step, I made a copy of the wincmd.ini file with Windows Explorer:

Configuration - Options - Operations - Save on exit: "Panels (brief/full, etc.)" ticked.
In the left panel always tab, locked, but directory changes allowed for D:\zzz was active.
The testfolder D:\zzz contained 2 subfolders and 2 files.

1. TC - 9.12 (x64) - [left] sortorder=0 TC not started
2. TC - 9.12 (x64) - [left] sortorder=0 Start TC - Save Settings
3. TC - 9.12 (x64) - [left] sortorder=3 Sort date of "Locked, but directory changes allowed" tab - Save Settings
4. TC - 9.12 (x64) - [left] sortorder=3 Files - Quit (ALT+F4) - wincmd.ini is saved automatically
5. TC - 9.12 (x64) - [left] sortorder=0 Start TC [- Save Settings] --> For me this seems to be the problem!

1. TC - 8.52a (x86) - [left] sortorder=3 Sort date of "Locked, but directory changes allowed" tab - Save Settings
2. TC - 8.52a (x86) - [left] sortorder=3 Files - Quit (ALT+F4) - wincmd.ini is saved automatically
3. TC - 8.52a (x86) - [left] sortorder=3 Start TC [- Save Settings] --> OK

Here are again my summary - results (on my PC!):
1. Clean.ini | TC 9.12 (x86, x64) -> OK
2. wincmd.ini | TC 8.52a (x86, x64) -> OK
3. wincmd.ini | TC 9.0 and TC 9.12 (x86, x64) -> NOK (not OK)

EDIT:
The problem occurs with me starting from TC 9.0 in the following cases:
1. D:\zzz Tab, "locked, but directory changes allowed"
2. D:\zzz Tab, not locked
3. D:\zzz No tab for this folder, but a lot of Tabs, "locked, but directory changes allowed" - that means that after restart
3. TC activates a Tab, "locked, but directory changes allowed" and if I return to D:\zzz then sorting is not activated

Karl

[right] sortorder=3 | sorting lost after TC restart

Post by *tuska »

With sortorder=3 I did some more tests (TC 9.12 x64, x86):
Configuration - Options - Operations - Save on exit: "Panels (brief/full, etc.)" always ticked.

1. Configuration - Change Settings Files Directly... (to watch settings in EmEditor): wincmd.ini is ALWAYS OPEN(!)
2. right panel aktive, tab not locked, path: I:\zMMM\ -> [right] sortorder=0
3. sort date descending - switch to EmEditor - nothing changed
4. TC Configuration - Save settings - switch to EmEditor: Reload -> sortorder=3
5. TC ALT+F4 Exit - switch to EmEditor - Reload -> sortorder=3
6. Start TC (left panel aktive!) right panel: sort descending of tab, not locked I:\zMMM is lost!
7. switch to EmEditor: sortorder=3, save wincmd.ini in EmEditor (despite not asked for reload from EmEditor) -> sortorder=3 ...
7- DESPITE in right panel NO SORTING AVAILABLE!
8. TC Configuration - Save settings
9. switch to EmEditor: Reload wincmd.ini -> sortorder=0 -> wincmd.ini will be updated, what is displayed (= no sorting)

In my opinion something must be wrong here, because with TC 8.52a (x86) I can not observe this behavior,
i.e. the correct sorting is present in each of the above steps -> after restart, sorting remains!
I still can not believe that I am the only one where this problem occurs.

active tab not stored in [lefttabs] or [righttabs]?

Post by *tuska »

In these tests, I also noticed the following:
The active tabs in each panel are not stored in the wincmd.ini under [lefttabs] or [righttabs] !?
However, all inactive tabs in both panels exist under these sections.

Is there an explanation for this please?
Thanks.

For me this is not so clear, because
a) if I sort by date at three tabs, then after a TC restart under TC 9.12 sorting is lost on my pc on all three tabs!
b) if I sort by date at three tabs, then after a TC restart under TC 8.52a sorting is NOT lost on my pc!

In both TC versions under [lefttabs] or [righttabs] the active tab - after "configuration" - "save settings" - is not listed in my wincmd.ini.
But somewhere they must be stored, because they are available after TC restart.

[left] [right] - there are
From TC help
[LeftTabs], [RightTabs] Configuration of the folder tabs of the left and right panel, respectively. The active tab configuration is not stored here, but in the sections [left] and [right].
what i call "historical" and "compatibility" reasons.

Ahh, thanks! - Now I understand what you mean. Unfortunately, I have overlooked that.
Nevertheless, it remains open to me why there is a difference between TC 9.0 and the following and TC 8.52a [on my pc].

Since the sorting is not preserved for me in TC 9.12, I have now made an entry in the TC9.1x bug reports (English) Forum.

EDIT:
The solution presented by Gral works for me only under TC 8.52a and has the additional disadvantage that here settings
would have to be changed, which I would rather leave unchanged for me.

Hello everyone!

I was also experiencing this problem and nothing worked until I checked Configuration -> View Mode, selected default and changed View order to Unchanged

Hello and welcome,

just out of interest ...
Which TC version? 32bit or 64bit?
(There have been a number of bug fixes in the past <see: HISTORY.TXT>)

Could you please announce the relevant sections from wincmd.ini here, e.g.

Code: Select all

[ViewModes], [left], [right], [lefttabs], [righttabs], [ViewModeSwitch]
I would then try to recreate this problem with a clean_wincmd.ini.

No, I have no problem with that.

I just wanted to see if there could be a problem with a View mode and Auto Switch Mode,
because for me these definitions work without problems - also in connection with tabs.

In the statement from inovision, I suspect that it is the problem that has not yet been solved,
which at that time could only be solved by workarounds from Gral or petermad.

Example:

Code: Select all

LEFT: 1st tab, Locked, but directory changes allowed, manual sorting by date (descending), path: D:\Data
RIGHT: 1st tab, Locked, but directory changes allowed, manual sorting by date (descending), path: I:\Data
After TC restart, the 1st tab on the left is always active and the sorting is no longer available.
(The sorting was still retained in TC 8.52a).

In the meantime, in my opinion, such a "problem" can be solved reliably with a View mode *) and an Auto Switch Mode **).
In the "Default" View mode, the "Columns view:" and "Sort order:" fields should NOT be set to "Unchanged"
so that you can return to this view when another view is closed automatically.

View mode - <Default> could be, for example:
Columns view: Full
Sort order: Name

Example:
*) View mode

Code: Select all

Name .........:	Sorting (descending) by date
Columns view .:	Full
Sort order ...:	Date ☑ descending
**) Auto Switch Mode

Code: Select all

☑ Automatically switch view mode on directory change:
+: Must match: D:\Data
More sub-rules, click on "&" then on "| OR (any match)"
+: Must match: I:\Data
Set this mode: Sorting (descending) by date <-- Name of your View Mode!
Button "Apply", "OK"
If you change into the directory D:\Data or I:\Data, the Auto Switch Mode - rule is executed,
i.e. it is sorted in descending order by date.
If you leave these directories, the Auto Switch Mode is ended automatically and it is sorted again by name -> View mode <Default>.
This sorting is retained even after restarting TC.

One can't say it like that.
Your comments confirm that with certain settings in TC it is possible to achieve his goal.

For me, as already mentioned elsewhere, it does not work with such settings.
Therefore I use a View mode and Auto Switch Mode for such cases.

But what I don't think should be done to achieve your goal is this setting:
inovision wrote: 2019-12-14, 10:19 UTC I was also experiencing this problem and nothing worked until I checked Configuration -> View Mode,
selected default and changed View order to Unchanged
Reason:
With this setting, the sorting after TC restart is also retained (as in TC 8.52a, for example)
but an Auto Switch Mode can then no longer be ended automatically (but only manually).
