extent the File / Split feature for much larger file sizes

Post by *cskwg »

Hi!

I'd suggest to extent the File / Split feature to include much larger file sizes and to add an option to split into a certain number of files.

I am currently splitting +50GB archives because the FTP server cannot hold larger files. So file sizes up to 30 GB in the default drop-down box would be nice.

But splitting files into a certain number of parts for me often would be more helpfull and easier to use.

Kind regards
Karl

PS: Long term and avid TotalCommander user! Thanks for the great work!

You can enter any size (e.g. 10G) which will be remembered in the the list of suggested sizes for later use..

Hi!

This is what I am currently doing, but it is inconvenient.
Besides I am seeing sizes based on floppy disks and DVDs as kind of old fashioned. :) When did you use a floppy last time?

Kind regards
Karl

But I'm also not using the split feature any more in time of ntfs usb sticks with capacities >64GB (by the way: why do you use ftp or why is your server limited to files size < 50GB... but this is also off topic as some other users may still use floppy disk).

Am I wrong if I assume that these old fashion size selections wouldn't disturb you if the dialog would remember your last selection?

Holger

Saving the last used size in Wincmd.ini will be good solution.

Hi Holger,

both servers are in Azure. My FTP server (outside Azure) has a 50 GB limit. I am using it to transfer huge files between both servers. These files must be split. :)

The feature is working, but IMO it could be easier to use. Initially I also was not sure how to type the size, but '10000 MB' did work.

For me, specifying a number of parts sometimes would be easier.

Or split the size field into two: [number] and [unit], where [unit] could be a drop-down-list.

Karl

User definable sizes will be the perfect solution. Also option to split the file to N equal parts.

It is questionable if Mr. Ghisler want to spend time on adding those features on the command which is obsolete for most of the users.

But you can already enter any size manually!

The problem is that, the Split dialog always start with pre-selected value "1.44 MB (3.5")", so the custom value or other predefined values must be selected again each time.

I wrote above "Saving the last used size in Wincmd.ini will be good solution."
