Folder not showing up in TC

Post by *CWBillow »

OK, I am confused.

I have a folder "~ Registry" that is in/under the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder.

It shows up if I search for it (Alt-F7), but it does not show up in the file/folder lists.

Why, and how do I fix it?

Do you use 'Everything' to speed up searches in TC ?

I have Everything, but I don't have it "linked" to TC. How do I do that?

The reason why I asked is, that if you are using 'Everything' for TC searches you might find more files and folders than TC can "see", because 'Everything' is running as administrator, and TC is usually not run as administrator.

You can use ''Everything' in two ways with TC. For searching where you have to enable it by ticking the box: 'Everything' (TC 9.0 or later) in the "Find files" dialog. ( http://madsenworld.dk/tcmd/everything1.png )

You can also use 'Everything' to give fast results for calculating dir-sizes when you press Alt+Shift+Enter (TC 9.10 or later). You must enable that in "Options" -> "Operation" -> "Calculate space occupied by subdirectories" -> "Everything". ( http://madsenworld.dk/tcmd/everything2.png )

For the latter to work, you have to configure 'Everything' to index folder sizes: "Everything Options" -> "Indexes" -> "Index folder size". ( http://madsenworld.dk/tcmd/everything3.png )

It is recommended that you use 'Everything' version 1.4 or newer.

Everything has to be running before TC starts. The easiest way is to install 'Everything' as a Service and start it at system startup. ( http://madsenworld.dk/tcmd/everything4.png )

Peter, I am using
Everything x64 1.4.1.895 and TC x64 9.20.

I just went to the Find Files dialog, and the Use Everything was already checked.

But withing TC, shouldn't it see the "~ Registry" folder in the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\~ Registry slot?

Why would it show up in explorer and not in TC?

Try and disable the use of 'Everything' in TC's "Find files" dialog and then do a new search - do you still find the folder?

Also, try and run TC as administrator and see if you then can see the folder...

TC "Ignore list"?
Menu "Configuration" -> "Options..." -> "Ignore list"

Btw,
using "Everything" in TC brings in the Search result of TC
- files and folders hidden with TC ("Ignore list") - cm_SwitchIgnoreList => EDIT: Not correct, please see next two posts below …; EDIT2: strikethrough
- hidden files and folders (cm_SwitchHidSys)
if you use Parameter ev: or ed: in the field "Search for:",
e.g.
ed:files:attrib:AH thumbs.db (field "Search in:" in TC must be filled),
ev:files:attrib:AH descript.ion (does not care about field "Search in:")

a search directly in "Everything" brings in the Search result of "Everything"
- files and folders hidden with TC ("Ignore list" in TC) - cm_SwitchIgnoreList in TC
- hidden files and folders (cm_SwitchHidSys in TC)
without specification of special parameters - simply enter a search term in the entry line, e.g. thumbs.db, etc.

The Ignore list is still respected when 'Everything' is enabled in the search dialog.

Sometimes it is also a good idea to force a rebuild of 'Everything's database ("Everything Options" -> "Indexes" -> "Force Rebuild" button) - I just did this, and it increased the number of files found on my C: drive with 110.
____________

Some tests:

If I search my C: drive for all files with 'Everything' enabled I get 157007 files in 21108 folders - and if I search without 'Everything' I get only 174685 files in 20690 folders - this shows how 'Everything' finds more than TC by itself.

If I turn my Ignore filter OFF the numbers are 255547 files in 41557 folders with 'Everything' and 255044 files in 41115 folders without 'Everything' - this shows that 'Everything' respects the Ignore list

If I set IgnoreLinks=8 in wincmd.ini in order to ignore junctions and symlinks I still get 157007 files in 21108 folders with 'Everything' enabled - but if I search without 'Everything' I now get only 171235 files in 19947 folders - this shows that searching with 'Everything' does NOT respect the IgnoreLinks=8 setting.

Interestingly enough if I run TC as administrator I only get a few more files with 'Everything' enabled 175067 (vs 175007) in the same number of folders (21108), whereas if I search as administrator without 'Everything' I get much more: 180495 in 22326 folders.

Thanks for pointing this out.
I've done several tests and probably turned off the "Ignore list" and then I came to the wrong conclusion.
I have corrected my statement above.
