Resolved: I need your help - Microsoft Smartscreen

Post by *ghisler(Author) »

Edit: Total Commander no longer causes a Smartscreen warning. Thanks for all your help!

Today I have released Total Command 9.22 release candidate 1. Although the installer and program are digitally signed, they are not trusted by Windows and display the Microsoft Smartscreen warning. This has never happened in the past. I have read that the warning only goes away when many thousand people download the program and allow it via Smartscreen. If this problem remains, then Total Commander 9.21a will remain the last final release forever.

Therefore I need your help: Even if you do not plan to install the pre-release version, please download it from here:
https://www.ghisler.com/922_rc1.htm

After the download, launch the installer and click on "More information", then "Run anyway". Afterwards, you can abort the installation if you do not want to install the pre-release version yet.

Thank you for your help!

IE 9 users can't access ghisler.ch and totalcommander.ch over SSL (btw, no problem accessing ghisler.com!),
so on https://www.ghisler.com/922_rc1.htm I suggest to add also http links to totalcommander.ch downloads (or move distributions directly to ghisler.com.)

OK, http links added.

Edit: ghisler.ch should work again in IE9, it does in IE8! I had disabled TLS v1 for security reasons, but apparently IE has TLS v1.1 and v1.2 disabled.

I can confirm both ghisler.ch and totalcommander.ch work in IE9 over SSL now. Also today I don't get a SmartSceen warning for TC 9.22 rc 1 distribution files anymore, no matter whether I download over https or http.

Turns out that SmartScreen can be turned off or put in 'warning mode'.

see this link:
https://www.howtogeek.com/75356/how-to-turn-off-or-disable-the-smartscreen-filter-in-windows-8/
this refers to Win8 and Win10.

On my PC I have Windows Security>App&Browser control, 3 options set to warn - this might be the reason I had no issues with TC 9.22rc1.

The most annoying SmartScreen thing is that it causes a parent process (even Explorer) to hang for some minutes if you start some installer when a machine has no internet connection, until this stupid program understand that internet is not available and shows a dialog with Run button...
