External devices as phone and cameras connected via USB not seen

Post by *vfomino »

Hi,
I am using TC for a long time and it used to "see" any USB connected devices as phone (Samsung) and cameras (Nikon D90).
As I am transferring my photos from camera to PC via USB cable, I would like do it fast. Now, when I connect my camera, the internal card is not seen directly by TC. So, I have to open the folders from camera card via Windows Explorer, and copy in a folder created via TC. By the way, I do not like at all Windows Explorer so I avoid it as much as possible. Sam thing applies to the phone connected to PC via USB cable. I do remember that in the past I could use TC for those tasks.
Please help. maybe is a configuration thing (??).

Thank you in advance,
Victor Fomino

Hi Victor.

To access connected external devices such as camera, smartphone / cell phone, tablet and such,
use the "Drive combobox" drop-down menu:
c
d
e

+ Computer (drive overview) <<<<<<<<<< There <
My Documents (directory)
\ Network Neighborhood

The same can be accessed via menu "Commands > Open Desktop Folder" (internal command cm_OpenDesktop)
and then at the "Computer / This PC" entry (internal command cm_OpenDrives)

With the internal command cm_OpenDrives you also can create an button or add keyboard shortcuts to.

Also see this from TC help just in case you have modified that yourself:

[Configuration]
ShowExtraDrives=7

Show extra items in the drive dropdown combobox.
Sum of:
1: My Computer
2: My documents
4: External devices without drive letter, e.g. Smartphones

(ShowExtraDrives=7 is all of them)

See Help > Configuration and Switches > Ini file Settings
Note: The location of the ini files can be seen in menu Help - About Total Commander.
If entry doesn't exists in the INI, just create them.

Unfortunately not all devices allow direct access to memory cards. Some devices provide an option to select access protocol (e.g. modern Android devices support MTP/PTP protocols but don't allow direct memory card access), some only have one possible protocol (direct or virtual).

If a device allows direct access to its memory, you can see a USB memory card in TC, but otherwise you have to use stupid and slow MTP/PTP protocol which provides only virtual access to memory, and Stefan2 has already described how to access such devices within TC.
