Find Files (Alt-F7) VERY slow to open. Please help.

Post by *IlanSh »

No plugin installed.

It gets worse by the day. Now it takes 20 seconds to get to the Find Files dialog box (after Alt-F7).

The only unusual thing I can think of - this is a licensed copy, and the license is 19 years old or so (updated key file when it's format changed)

Is it as bad if you press Shift+Alt+F7 ? (for separate process)

Better by x2 factor, still 10 seconds.

It is not the licence key, mine is 25 years old (updated to new format 22 years ago), and I don't have that problem.

Try and start TC with a clean wincmd.ini file and see if the problem still exist.

Hi, already tried this. Some improvement, but not much.

Maybe TC caches something with each search?

The reason I suspect the keyfile is that I never heard from anyone about such problem, and I had this trouble before, at least since I moved to Windows 10 (maybe earlier)

Just had a brainwave, will try TC portable.

No portable, I tried th 32Bit ver, same results.

Made a screencap vid - I press Alt-F7 as soon as I get the TC window. This time around it was just 10 seconds though:

Your sceencap shows a dropbox directory - maybe online files are being fetched? - Is it just as slow on ordinary directories on your local harddisk(s) ?

Nope. TC is installed on a different drive that is not backed up by Dropbox (in fact on SSD), and the delay happens no matter where I search.

Try using "process monitor" from www.sysinternals.com (now part of Microsoft). It allows you to see what Total Commander is doing during these 20 seconds. Make sure to set the following filter:

Process name - contains - totalcmd - Include

You may send me the created list (zipped) to support at ghisler dot com for analysis.

Maybe TC is running in compatibility mode? Or in some kind of sandbox? Or it's a graphics driver issue.

Didn't find "process viewer" but "process monitor". Sent CSVs + text file. Thanks!

Took a pick at the CSV. over 4,000 processes (or threads? I really do not know that stuff) failed just on relaunching TC.... some serious mess @_@

Has this by any chance been resolved? I checked with procmon, and in my case it seems total commander is enumerating registry over same OneDrive related keys for 5 seconds in a loop.
I don't have cloud plugin installed.

So far I haven't received any clues why it is slow on this user's PC, sorry.
