Alt-F7 Search path not found - FIXED

Post by *sangahm »

I'm a long time TC user but have never run across this before, so I'm stumped.

When I try to search a bitlocker drive using Alt-F7 and put the root directory (d:\) in the "Search in:" field, it always comes back with error "Search path not found: d:\"

I can search on any directory beneath the root, just not the root. Do I need to specifically grant access somewhere?

My config:
Win 10 Enterprise April 2018
Dell 7470
16G
TC 9.22a

Can you search in D:\ from within Explorer?
Can you navigate to D:\, then start a search in "D:" instead of "D:\"?

Yes, can search from Explorer. And yes can navigate to D: in TC and see all folders.

For the TC Search, also tried changing to D:, and even D, with no success. Also did both uppercase and lowercase D, and selected with Drive button -- no luck.

Other data points:
I tried another SD card on another USB port and it also will not allow search from the root, but below the root it searches fine.

I can search from the root on my C: drive though. And also search is successful from the root on an external drive that is Veracrypt encoded.

Just downloaded Double Commander and it does not have this problem, so it seems that TC is not handling something correctly.

Another issue is when trying to copy anything to the root of the USB drive. I get the similar "The given target path d: is invalid!" error.

And again DC does that operation as expected.

Are you perhaps running Total Commander with higher user rights (as administrator)? It can have such effects.

yes, but my local account has admin rights. this has not changed since I've been using TC (many, many years).

But your response got me to check and sure enough I had to check the compatibility settings for the app. I first turned on compatiblity mode for Win 7 but that didn't work. I then ran the troubleshooter and it recommended Win 8. That didn't work either. It then recommended Win 7 and this time it works. Not sure why it didn't work when I tried the first time, but it is working now.

Thanks for the pointer.

That doesn't mean that your TC is running with elevated rights - just that you have the possibility.

If there is a ^ after your name in the Title bar of your TC - then you are running in elevated mode - otherwise not.

Thank you, as that's what I needed to know. I do now see TC with the ^ character, which is why it's working. I don't recall if it was there before, probably not.
Even after using this program for about 15 years, I still learn something new about it.
