Preview png files as icon files do, possible?

Post by *pakosan »

Listing of folders and files (in details view) in a pane show their respective icons so that folders have the same folder icon, text files the same text file icon, and so on.

The exception are icon files that show a preview of each respective content.

Is it possible for a png file (16x16 or whatever) to show a preview of its content as its icon rather than the default png file icon that applies to all png files?

Perhaps some kind of plugin?

Thank you all.

Hi, did you already have checked out the Configuration/Options?

I suppose you mean the Configuration/Display/Icons page.

Yes, I have.

But I do not see any option to show the content of a png file as its icon.

Not an preview of the content, but you can enable file-related icons (kind of stylized pictures of file content).

Me think you mean smtg like

-- Configuration > Thumbnails
and
-- menu Show > Thumbnail View

That's what I use now.

It's a pity because the preview function of icon files is really handy.

If it could be applied to png, that would be awesome.

There must be some technical reason I'm unaware of.

Could you show us your settings for thumbnails - like: http://madsenworld.dk/tcmd/thumbsconfig.png ?

Well as you can see, it works well here with your settings (and otherwise a clean wincmd.ini file): https://madsenworld.dk/tcmd/pngthumbs.png (Windows 10, TC 9.22a x64)

Try and start your TC with a blank wincmd.ini file - and see if it still doesn't work.

I'm afraid I have explained myself poorly, it would seem.

What you are showing is exactly what I am using.

Please look at that image in that link.

As you can see, the icon files show their content while the png do not.

I would like, if at all possible, to be able to see the content of each png as its icon, as icon files do.

Would perhaps in IrfanView this setting bring something?

- Start IrfanView as administrator
- Options - Settings - Extensions
- Button "Icons"
- Use different icons (Icons-PlugIn)

The file extensions, e.g. PNG, BMP, JPG, get different icons.

Personally, I don't think that's possible because, for example
- IrfanView (PNG, BMP, JPG,...)
- Winword
- Excel
etc.
do not show the content in the icon either...

True, programs are associated with files and usually file extensions determine which icon to show depending on the program they are associated with.

But so are icon files and they display their own contents nonetheless, rather than the icon of the program they are associated with.

It seems that TotalCommander should be able to override the presentation of a png file as it does with icons.

I just do not know how complex such a thing is, programmatically speaking.

Perhaps Mr. Ghisler would consider looking into it.

Is there a way, other than this, to have him weigh in on the issue?

Thank you for this link.
I have installed the program and it works under Windows 10 Pro (x64) Version 1903 (OS Build 18362.356).
SageThumbs 2.0.0.23\readme.txt wrote:Features:

* Extended thumbnail image view of explorer folder
* Thumbnail image in explorer context menu (right-click menu)
* Extended info tips
* Support 162 image formats (224 extensions) via GFL Library
* Support additional 26 image formats via XnView plugins (if installed)
* Send by mail support
* One-click conversion to popular image formats support
* Wallpaper selection support
* Copy to clipboard support

Please read carefully the following information.
As SageThumbs is a Windows Explorer context menu extension,
there is no an executable file that you should launch to bring it up.
To use it, just open any folder with image files in Windows Explorer,
and then right-click a file you want to preview. You'll see the
thumbnail immediately in the context menu.
The program serves its purpose, but the icon does not change (as requested by pakosan).

I assumed you were talking about the Thumbnail view because when Stefan2 wrote:

You answered:

I don't know of any way to have the file icons shown as thumbnail for .png files or any other image file type - except for .ico files - or in thumbnail view.
