Mark/Synchronize Dirs: Comparing directories doesn't work

Post by *ChipAHoy »

I am trying out the Trial Version.
On my screen are the two windows with my computer layout in each. I have brought a directory to the forefront in each window and am trying to compare them.
When I click on Mark/Synchronize Dirs, a pop-up says that only the following combinations can be synchronized. I am trying to synchronize Directory to Directory, so I don't understand why it isn't working, or what command I should be using.

Your description is not very specific.
I have brought a directory to the forefront in each window and am trying to compare them.
What exactly does that mean? What directories are shown on the left and the right side, respectively?
When I click on Mark/Synchronize Dirs,
I guess you mean Mark/Compare Dirs. Or Commands/Synchronize Dirs?
a pop-up says that only the following combinations can be synchronized.
An the "following combinations" are .... ?

An the "following combinations" are .... ?
Most likely these:
---------------------------
Total Commander
---------------------------
Error - Synchronize only supports the following combinations:
directory<->directory
directory<->zip archive
directory<->ftp server
zip archive<->zip archive (compare only)
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------
It is most likely that ChipAHoy has a virtual folder like \\Desktop or \\Libraries opened in one or both file panels.

That*s why I asked him. BTW: who has edited the title of this thread? And simply copied the non-existing command "Mark/Synchronize..." from the initial post? Great. That's why I asked ChipAHoy, which command he really means.

I'm sorry for the poor description and vagueness.

The left directory is the Music directory under my user profile. The other directory that I want to compare is labeled as \\Music\*.*. So, \\Music\ is a virtual directory? What does that mean?

"Synchronize Dirs" is what I chose in the Commands menu.

Thanks very much for the help!

So, \\Music\ is a virtual directory? What does that mean?
A virtual directory is not a directory of the filesystem, but a construction Windows uses. It can show files from several physical directories for example will \\Desktop show files from both "C:\Users\USER\Desktop\" and c:\Users\Public\Desktop\

\\Music\ shows files from both c:\Users\USER\Music\ and c:\Users\Public\Music\

Other examples
\\Control Panel\ shows the content of control panel (as with control.exe)
\\Network\ shows the network neigbourghood
\\Programs and Features\ show all installed programs
etc.

There are several limitations to what TC can do with items in virtual panels, since they are controlled by Windows Explorer

A virtual directory name is something like an alias. TC (and other file managers) does not resolve the alias names and can only compare/synchronise "real" directories.
