You can create an internal association:
1. Files - Internal associations
2. Add
3. Enter: *.ico
4. Change icon to: %1
5. Leave all other fields empty and confirm

I had the same problem recently, I accidently associated .ico files with Imagine Wiever.

Try this:

Start regedit.exe
Go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.ico\UserChoice
Edit the value (not the name) of Progid to icofile

Or just delete the UserChoice key.

After that you have to log out and in to your Windows account again.

And you can delete that TC internal association again.

Could you probably have bee running some program (image viewer for example) in between that could have take ove .ico association again?

What is the value of HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.ico\UserChoice - Progid now?

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.ico\UserChoice doesn't exist anymore (deleted).
whats interesting I made a backup copy of UserChoice entry before delete it.

Previous Value:

Code: Select all

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.ico\UserChoice]
"Hash"="2qytC/xqc/A="
"ProgId"="AppX43hnxtbyyps62jhe9sqpdzxn1790zetc"
when I restore this entry it get auto deleted after short time.
to preview images I use imagine TC lister and as image viewer I use portable xnviewMP.

"AppX43hnxtbyyps62jhe9sqpdzxn1790zetc" is Windows Photos App.

I deleted the whole UserChoice key - and so far that sticks here by me.
