feature request; select 1 file of each grup(find dub. files)

Post by *nimbus »

After find dublicates and feeded to listbox, if there is an option that
"select only 1 file from dublicates", is to be very usefull while working too much files and too much grouped dublicates exist in listbox.

(sorry for my english again.)

TC is not suited for the task you are asking for, indeed the duplicate check is not useful at all currently because one always has to manually check the found duplicates for further managing.
The proposal has been made several times in the past but ghisler has always chosen to ignore it.

Please use CloneSpy, it can do what you want and more, it's the perfect duplicate finder.

Old issue---

:) Hello !
¤ Like icfu said, this issue has been discussed already; i.e., from the Search, you would have found THAT THREAD :P

CloneSpy seems the best free tool, though it's in English only (and not translatable…)
EDIT : I sent a suggestion to the Author of CloneSpy about a future multilingual feature planning…
I fear that remains a X-Mas wish :(
But : "Who attempts nothing gets nothing" !

Unfortunately no one has proposed a good method WHICH of the duplicates should be selected and which not, therefore I haven't implemented anything yet. Good ideas to solve this are always welcome. Selecting newer files is not an option, since duplicates often also have the same date/time.

thanks for clonespy link and I always search before write but this time I had been miss.
I can understand well now after I deleted the files had been classification. (Find dublicates found them and I coulnt notice they are on correct place.)
But still I am thinking its necessary feature. Working with files always has risk and find dubs has a bit more.
Which one? actually anyone but my choose is the which has the longest name(if names are same like date then any).
thanks your interests

@ghisler:
There can be no good ideas because duplicate finding is very basic in TC by design anyway.

The only thing that makes sense in the current situation is to select exactly one file, doesn't matter which one.
Take the first one of each group, that would be best for the visibility of the duplicate groups.

Other options like longest name (sorry nimbus), shortest name, numbers in file names or not, *whatever*, are completely arbitrarily.
So, if you don't plan to make the duplicate finding option better in general you shouldn't waste time to think about which file to select, just select it.

>>> To Ch. Ghisler and All :

:) Hello !
¤ It's the user's business to decide what copy in a group of duplicate files he/she wishes to keep, in my modest opinion.
¤ Hence -a little like icfu said - I propose a first approach on that (fake) picture
{ Apart : :oops: Oops ! a bit long to draw, I forgot to dine ! }
* What do you think ?

 Kind regards,
Claude

Looks nice but I would prefer a simple solution first to prevent that we will have to wait till 2010:
Ghisler: Good idea, I will take it on my wish list (aka the bin?)...

Sorry... ;)

Icfu

P.S.: How do you make those fake pics? Any program?

With an oldie !

Post by *Clo »

¤ I just added the button and the caption on a capture of the "Advanced search"; then, I pasted it on a double-height empty picture as BMP in my old good Corel 3.0 16-bit (In French). I can get a zoom-in *16 (1600%), this oldie is pleasant to use, and not greedy at RAM; it has nice palettes, even customizable; inconveniences : DOS names only, and written as all uppercase. Also, needs to resave the BMP in XnView, 'cause they are always 1 KB bigger than the M$-Paint ones (that causes problems sometimes)
* I wrote the texts in Paint, 'cause the "Text" feature in Corel. 3.0 is in "points" about the size, and (the only) difficult function to use. Then, copy/paste. :P
- Convert into PNG… and the trick is played ! I draw icons and tool-bar bitmaps in the same way. I've a much newer graphic soft (Adobe PhotoShop Pro 5) but it hangs in my PCs.

Incredible!
I really thought you had some magic program where you can pick up radio buttons, list buttons and stuff to rebuild such dialogs.

I hope you don't need too long to make such pics, I would need 10 hours probably... ;)

Not so long---

Ten hours ? my God, no ! Much less, something like 4 --- 5 hours, no more; I've some background-bitmaps, I write texts on; I keep too tick-boxes and so on in some pics... but I had just to copy / paste here.
And Alt+Tab is the best thing in Billdows - since the version 3.1 ;)
Working like you tell'ld need a programming soft, and I've not one yet @ home. I mean : a Delphi, but my son has installed some C++ and VB or so, it's that he's studying, but for me it's almost "Chinese" :|

* Another fake-pic drawn in the same way : five hours with a lot of tabs (boring !)

Why should we ramble about for one more time while the easy and most effective way is to study how existing implementations work?

You can get more effective observations like this Christian.

Oh, and one more point concerning your concern on data security in the current situation. Deleting duplicates files with the name wincmd.ini for example can be disastrous (well, not in TC's case as the file is automatically recreated but you get what I mean), but deleting file duplicates with the name Me_and_Claire_in_Greece_456.jpg is not so harmful.

The suggested feature it's a convenience feature and not a data safety one. Sure the latter one is more important so just display that warning message and let the user face the consequences of his/her actions! ;)

:) Hello Panos !
…so just display that warning message and let the user face the consequences of his/her actions! ;)
¤ It's exactly that I expressed above as : "It's the user's business… etc."
¤ What about a dialog-box like the pic I propose ?

icfu,

BTW: I do such things in Delphi... that's probably the magic program you talk of (or any of those Borland RAD thingies).

Just my two eurocents.
