Slow file access win10 TC

Post by *ysu »

Using 9.51 64-bit, Windows 10.

I've noticed that compared to my old computer (win7) the file operations in TC are rather slow.
Both are running nvme SSDs, the old one a 960evo 1TB, the new one a 970evo plus 2DB.

I've done some testing; and file copying is slow compared to the windows file explorer.
Explorer vs TC test: I've copied the contents of a folder and subfolders of ~22MB and ~1500 files in explorer, took about 2s, whereas in TC it took about 8s.

However, I did not notice this speed problem in copying originally, rather when using the file compare (by content, disregarding time of file). Comparing a project of 1500 files used to be lightning quick (so quick I could not even notice the process). Now it's around 8s. Comparing a larger one, ~3200 files takes 22s - this seems ridiculously slow for such a setup.

There must be something to do but what?

Thanks in advance!

What are your settings in the Configuration dialog, section "Copy/Delete"?
Aside from the options for the copy method itself, do you have by any chance the "Verify after copying (MD5 checksum)" checkbox there activated?

If you can't spot anything obvious, re-try your copy operation in TC using a fresh wincmd.ini with default settings, and see whether this will have an impact on performance. To do so, start TC like this:

Code: Select all

<<PathToTotalCommander>>\totalcmd64.exe /i=%TEMP%\copytest.ini
This will start TC with a fresh new INI file (named copytest.ini) with default settings.

But please note; the file comparison is very slow, too. That's the more important one, and the more baffling.

Temporarily disable Windows Defender and test again. My guess is that it has a major influence (again).

Could you try and run TC on your Windows 10 with the wincmd.ini file from your Windows 7 and see if that makes any difference?

That is the file I'm running it with - first thing was I copied my configs over. :)

Thanks!

This one does make a major difference. I've tried to turn it off, 2s copy, then on again, same folder (so it should be cached) 7s, 8s, 7s then off again, back to 2s.

It would seem the "real time protection" is a "real pain in the butt".
but it also seems that Explorer is exempt from the Anal Examination of every file, and thus is much much faster.

I wonder if you can put an exemption on TC as well...

And of course the file compare is back to instant as well.

I wonder if you can put an exemption on TC as well...
- Open Windows Settings <WIN+I>
- search for: "Virus & threat protection"
- "manage settings"
- scroll down to "Exclusions" -> "Add or remove exclusions"
- "+ Add an exclusion" -> "Process"
- enter process name: "TOTALCMD64.EXE"
