Icons by file type

Post by *ddofborg »

At the moment you can setup different colors for different files types. That's a very nice feature! But what about setting up symbols (icons) by file type. Normaly TC wil read associated file types, but that feature is quite slow, so I don't use it. Right now I only have icons for some archive file types. I use Only standard symbols-feature. But I'd really like to set not only colors for file types, but also icons for file types.

I read those and I couldn't find anything :( Maybe I missed it. Do you remember where you saw it?

• On the main-window screen-shot (Tutorial), click on "Files" menu >> Associate with on the menu >> read the paragraph…
- With the "Edit type" dialog, you can change the icon of an existing file-type (please, watch the pictures too)
• Wheather a file as no associated type, double-click on it; you get the Windows dialog "Open with…" or so; choose a program to open that file-type; then, you can assign the icon you wish to that new file-type, following the previous handling (Associate With >> Dialog >> Edit type etc.)…

Hoping that helps,
 Kind regards,
Claude

Clo, that's not I want. I want to have the same thing as with colors. I want to set icons for all my documents at once. I don't want to associate every possible type. Sometimes I want to change icons for files less than 30 minutes old, or something. It's not like I don't know how it's done! And like I said before: Normaly TC wil read associated file types, but that feature is quite slow, so I don't use it.!!!

I really like your idea escpecially to make it based on user defined filetypes.
But what happen if the user hasn't defined a filter for a specific filetype? Use the icon setting defined in configurations? Completely disable all other icons? There must be a hierarchy between these two worlds. Do you have any other ideas how two integrate filetype and system (Windows) based icon loading.

(Maybe just using such a new icon for filetypes feature will help us to find the mysterious iconcache bug  )

There are already 4 options for how to show the icons (menu: CONFIGURATION/OPTIONS/DISPLAY) why not make one extra?

That doesn't make sense from my point of view. If you change the current icons settings to another value you'll set how many of the system items are used. Providing just an additional option will not solve the problem mentioned above.

Here is my idea: Provide a checkbox on top of the icon settings (not an additional option field). If it's checked filetype based filters will be displayed on top of the hierarchy. It must be visible at first view that the other chosen options will be used if no appropriate filetype based filters has been found. If no icon displaying is activated the checkbox has to be deactivated.
A button to call a "Defining assignments between filetypes and icons"-dialog should be placed her too.
