[TC 10.50 b1] unintuitive options/button Sync

Post by *AntonyD »

- Button "Sync" to choose re-synchronize method, e.g. to look for equal characters only after a space
This one was stated in ENG chm-help file from inside the installed new 10.50 b1 application.
BUT I should say that I completely not understand the expected/coded behavior for all of these variants...
It would be very graceful from your side, dear author, if some additional textual examples were provided for each option...
Because I do not see any English LNG file I can only use DEU as example:
6219="&1 Eingefьgten Text innerhalb einer Zeile finden (resynchronisieren)"
6220="&2 Eingefьgten Text nur bei Leerzeichen finden"
6221="&3 Eingefьgten Text nur an benutzerdefinierten Trennzeichen finden"
6223="&0 Vergleich an festen Positionen (z. B. fьr Tabellen)"

So for each of these options I would like to see some pretty forward example, which can easily to describe WHAT will change if I choose this option.
To make it clear - under what conditions it is BEST to use this particular option. WHAT exactly does it allow for a more accurate comparison.

Since it is applied immediately when you choose it, you can see the behaviour directly.

The first option is how TC did it until version 10. When there was a character mismatch, it just looked for the next 3 matching characters in both files. This could be in the middle of a word.

The second one only looks for matching text after a space, and the third after a specific character (e.g. space and word separators like dashes).

The last one never tries to re-synchronize (doesn't look for inserted text). This is best for tables like this
00 01 01 00 01
00 01 10 00 01

To highlight the 01 and 10 at fixed positions and not try to find inserted/deleted text.

You're right! But what I see - does not fit in my mind in terms of "what I should expect" and/or "in which conditions it will be more accurated to use option#x"...

Thus your textual description which have been done in your post - brings a little bit more information. BUT i should say and probably you also would agree with that - what a few prepared special screenshots with some specific text inside compared files AND PLUS textual information, which describe them - will bring the most biggest impact for the mind in order to be able to do "better analyses and understanding" regarding: why and when to use option #X or #Y. IMHO,
Also such comprehensive explanations even should be put inside the CHM-help file for the Release version of TC 10.50.
Therefore, the work you do to prepare such a detailed analysis of the options used - will not go to waste, because it can be referenced later in the help|tooltips.

Maybe someone wants to write a description which is better understandable for normal users?

But who knows better than author - the hardcoded behavior for those options  ?
So, only he can prepare such pics and descriptive text

Anyway, the button needs to be mentioned in the Help, which it is currently not.

???
It is mentioned in the help in "Dialog box: Compare by content":
Sync: 1 Determines how inserted text is handled within a line. In Total Commander 10 and older versions, if there was a difference, a search was made for at least 3 matching characters, and the comparison continued there, even if it was in the middle of a word (option 1). The comparison can now be resumed either at a space (2) or a user-defined separator character (3), or the synchronization can be disabled entirely, e.g. for tables (0).

Indeed it is  - I don't know why I didn't see it in the first place. I could have been using wcmd_eng.lng at the time - it will cause F1 to open wcmd_eng.chm wich is still the old version of the help file.
