It means that "Plugins" should be displayed as a SUBMENU for "4 Image/Multimedia" item rather than a separate item in the main Lister menu.
Or this item should be renamed to "Image/Multimedia Plugins".

I don't understand - why so many unnecessary contrivances?
The current implementation works completely as expected - only one bug - when using the "Define view method by file type" option/list!
Just fix it and everything will be completely valid and understandable!

For *all* modes (text, bin, hex, ...), "internal" should be checkmarked once TC displays a file with its internal functionality.

This option is located, if you look closely - strictly inside the "Plugins" section;)
YES - you can clarify and WHAT exactly is a plugin and what is NOT the built-in out of the box functionality.
But the point that this checkbox should NOT ALWAYS be enabled for all modes is a very obvious thing.

I think it should be considered internal

- Image loaded via Irfanview? Difficult to say.

I think it should be considered external, preferable with its own menu item - currently it is impossible to see whether an image is loaded via TC's internal GDI+ / DirectShow functions or via IrfanView/XnView.

And it would be very inconvenient to use.

This would include all other modes like text, binary etc. too. I don't think that they could be called plugins.
