///_Android_data empty on Android 13

Post by *schinge »

Hi,

My phone just got Android 13 and now it seems that ///_Android_data doesn't work anymore to show the data files of the installed apps using TC 3.40b4 - the folder is just empty. Will there be a workaround or is this another limitation of Android 13?

During the Android 13 beta test, users told me that they could still access ///_Android_data if they updated from Android 12 to 13 and had given Total Commander access rights to ///_Android_data while still on Android 12. It sounds like this no longer works?

Apps installed on Android 13 definitely cannot access ///_Android_data, but there is a workaround to access individual folders inside of ///_Android_data. This worked during the beta test, but it's possible that it no longer works in the final release.

To try it, you will have to uninstall Total Commander, and then reinstall it.
But first, you should backup your settings:
1. Change via home folder - system main directory to the following folder:
/data/data/com.ghisler.android.TotalCommander

This is possible without root rights!

2. Back up the "shared_prevs" and "files" directories, e.g. to a folder in /storage/emulated/0

Restore:
1. As above
2. Copy back the "shared_prevs" and "files" directories
3. Important: Quit Total Commander via the task manager (Android tasks) and restart it,
otherwise it will overwrite the restored data when exiting!

Thanks for your reply. I tried the workaround - and it works now! The only difference is, that I have to give the access rights to TC for every app subfolder. But as I only need three of them this is quite acceptable. Thanks again.

Yes, that's the new workaround for Android 13! The old one where you give the rights for all folders has been disabled by Google. I will update the app so the old workaround will no longer be used on Android 13 even if the user updated from 12 and had already granted access.

I just tried this.

I get this (expected) message when I try to access the Installed apps:

When I click through, I can't select the Android/data folder:

You need to use the beta version 3.40b4 to access the folders inside of Android/data on Android 13, you can no longer access the entire Android/data folder as on Android 12 or older.
