Time to rethink about totalCmd for ios?

Post by *whytea »

Apple has a different file system compared to Windows or Linux. Since ios 11, a File app was introduced which kind of like Windows File Manager. Later a Samba (smb) client was added which makes it handy to share a folder between Windows/Linux with ios. Seems that it's time to consider a TotalCmd for ios?

And do iOS11 have the same underlying API for process and function calls of TC as WindowsTM do have?

Linux and IOS are niche products. TC is for the mainstream: Windows and Android.

That's not the case. In the USA, iOS has 55% market share, Android is dying out there.
Unfortunately Apple is much more restrictive than Google in what they allow and what they don't. A Total Commander for iOS has very little chance to be approved, Apple does not want the user to deal with files.

iOS has a different design philosophy for its file system. Unlike Windows and Linux, every app keeps and manages its own folder/files. To get a file from another app or the iOS' album, it'll have to be imported ("shared") first. There is also a Downloads folder for files downloaded via browser. I came from a Windows/Linux/Android world until someone gifted me an iPhone a few years ago. To be honest, I felt severely handicapped for the first two weeks with my iPhone. But once I got used to it, it's not really that bad.

Here are some thoughts. The dual-panel UI of TotalCmd could fit quite nicely into iOS Share paradigm. The panels can be album/images and videos, Downloads/files, Other_app/files, ftp client/server, SMB client, etc.. Functions: import/output (i.e. share in/out) and file management. The current TotalCmd GUI really needs to be re-designed to have the iOS look-and-feel. Just my two cents :)

You can use iOS' Files App to connect to SMB shares and FTP servers.

And with the sandboxing you wouldn't be able to access the file system anyway.

I really don't see a need for TC on iOS.
