F3/F4 on directories and on compressed files

Post by *BlackWinny »

Hello !

Could we have a confirmation box when we click on F3 or F4 (generally by mistake when wanting to press F2) on directories and on compressed files ? Especially on directories.

Without this confirmation box it leads to the opening of a huge number of tabs in the programs associated to these two functions when it is a directory or of a huge size file (and unreadable, being code file) when it is a zip/rar file.

This confirmation box appearing in the case of directories and of compressed files would be extremely useful to prevent these situations, leaving the user confirm his choice when it is a deliberate action.

I don't know what you have installed
but there is nothing bad with F3 even on a large dir.
F4 has no function if there is no file selected.
and any normal configured Editor refuses to load archives without confirmation.
So I don't see any reason for this suggestion.

BlackWinny,
F3 on a directory opens Lister with size information. F4 on a directory shows a message box saying "No files selected!".
F3 on a large file opens it instantly (just checked with a 9 GB file). F4 on a large file depends on the configured editor.
You must be using some non-default settings which cause the behavior you describe.

I don't understand.

Here is my configuration for F3, nothing else:

Ok? Nothing irregular?

Now when in this situation for example :

... for example I would like to add an "s" at the foldername "Doc"...

If by mistake I click F3 instead of F2, I just would like to have a confirmation box to prevent this :

Is it so absurd to ask for such improvement like a confirmation box to prevent the opening in the text editor on all the files which are in this folder???

Could Christian reply himself?... because I'm sure he would understand the problem.

Sorry what do you expect if you configure Notepad++ as viewer
That makes no sense at all.
No one configures an Editor as viewer for all sort of files.
We don't need Christian to understand what you see
and there is also no confirmation needed to prevent that.

BlackWinny,
Ok? Nothing irregular?
Well, I haven't really seen anyone configure an editor for the viewer function, so, that's actually highly irregular, yes. Especially if you have the same editor configured for F4. Why would you want F3 and F4 to do the same thing? Especially as it causes such frustrating things as you describe to happen.
Is it so absurd to ask for such improvement like a confirmation box to prevent the opening in the text editor on all the files which are in this folder???
Well, you configured it like that yourself, you can easily remove the config. In your configuration, Total Commander passes only the dir name to Notepad++, not all the names of the files inside that dir. It's Notepad++ that then decides to open all the files anyways.
I understand that for your config that might be frustrating, but I think the better way would be to adjust the config, or the settings of Notepad++ not to open all the files in a dir.
Otherwise, yes, we can wait for Christian's opinion.

Ahhh... Hacker, your explanation is much much more useful than the one from Horst.Epp.

Now I understand better what is my problem.

Sorry Horst.Epp, but your two replies were neither kind nor useful to make me understand correctly the problem. Replying to non-computer specialists (I'm an old biologist and musician of orchestra, I don't know a lot of things about computers) with such condescension and such a flat dismiss, such a "demurrer", is not the smartest way to help people to understand their problem. I'm not a young moron, I'm an old man who simply tries to understand what happens on his computer.
Hacker gave me a way more useful help by explaining the situation... and what I must do to fix it.

Thanks a lot, Hacker!
