Switching from TC x32 to x64

Post by *CharlesF »

I've always used the 32 bit edition of TC and was thinking of trying to 64 bit edition. If I update TC by running the combined installer will this make both edition available in the standard TC folder? Will I limited to running either edition or will I be limited to one or the other.

Also, will petermad's extended menus installed under the 32 bit edition still work under the 64 bit edition.

I've searched the forums and can't find any guidance on the topic.

Many thanks.

Regards,
Charles

Yes, both versions will be available and installed in the same folder. The installer will suggest to install in the folder where you last installed Total Commander. See also: https://www.ghisler.ch/wiki/index.php?title=Installer

You can run as much instances of the 32-bit version and 64-bit version as you want. All at the same time. They use the same configuration files, so basically think of them as being one and the same program.

I will let petermad advise you on that. He offers all kinds of different packes. Probably the package for Combined 32bit and 64bit will best suit your needs.

Thanks.

What about plugins?

Are there any big benefits to using the 64 bit edition?

My menus are provided for the combined 32/64bit installation of TC for the following OS's: Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 (Use the Windows 10 version for Windows 11) - see: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=33740 - the 3 first download links.

What about plugins?
You will need 64bit versions of your plugins for the 64bit version of TC, but MOST plugins are already installed for both 32bit and 64bit TC, even if you only used the 32bit TC when you installed them. You can check all your plugin folders for the presence of a .wlx64, *.wfx64, *wdx64 or a *.wfx64 file. All plugins which have that will automatically also support 64bit TC when you install the combined 32/64bit TC in the same folder you used for the 32bit TC.
