Copy speed much slower on TC versus Explorer
Hello everyone,
I have upgraded my PC, from an old 6800K with wireless connectivity, to a 13900K with 10G wired connectivity. The actual link speed is 5000 up / 5000 down, but that will be sorted out later (I know the cause, but I need to buy some optic fiber).
Using Windows Explorer, I can copy large files (over 1 GB) from my server to my PC at 350-400 MB/s.
Using Total Commander, the copy speed was capped at 55-65 MB/s.
I went to Configuration / Copy/Delete and played around with Big file copy mode, managing to raise copy speed to around 170-180 MB/s, which is still less than half of what Windows Explorer does. Current settings are:
Source+Target on same disk: 262144 K
Source+Target on different disks: 65536 K
Version: Total Commander 11.01
What should I configure to reach Windows Explorer copy speeds?
Thank you!

Re: Copy speed much slower on TC versus Explorer
This isn't normal. Some third party program (antivirus?) must be slowing down Total Commander.
Since Explorer is fast, try using Explorer mode also in Total Commander (Configuration - Options - Copy/delete).

With "Explorer mode" I guess you mean "standard copy method" ?ghisler(Author) wrote: 2023-11-13, 16:24 UTC Since Explorer is fast, try using Explorer mode also in Total Commander (Configuration - Options - Copy/delete).

No, I mean "Use copy+paste via Explorer (only in case of copy problems)".With "Explorer mode" I guess you mean "standard copy method" ?

Re: Copy speed much slower on TC versus Explorer
I will continue to investigate, something is afoot. I know it's not Total Commander. It's something that is causing slow-downs in Total Commander.
My suspicion goes to Eset - I previously only had the Anti-virus, but I ran out of licenses and bought their Internet Security solution, which had 50% Black Friday discount. Could have been a mistake

Re: Copy speed much slower on TC versus Explorer
Maybe you could also try the top option:
"Use standard copy method (recommended)". This uses a single function, CopyFileEx, to copy the files, while the other internal functions copy with a loop of ReadFile and WriteFile. If ESET re-scans the file on each function call, the other internal functions will be terribly slow.

If ESET is the problems, ESET should have excludes as all antivirus tools.
Windows 11 Home, Version 24H2 (OS Build 26100.3915)
TC 11.55 RC1 x64 / x86
Everything 1.5.0.1391a (x64), Everything Toolbar 1.5.2.0, Listary Pro 6.3.2.88
QAP 11.6.4.2.1 x64

The top option was the default I started with.ghisler(Author) wrote: 2023-11-17, 10:32 UTC Maybe you could also try the top option:

It was ESET Internet Security in the end. Very intrusive piece of software.
Total Commander was not the only tool experiencing issues, TeraCopy experienced issues, HWInfo64 was crawling and using some CPU, games had choppy FPS...
I uninstalled it and installed just their antivirus. Works like a charm now, it's as if I have a completely different PC. All good
