What am I doing wrong that I cannot just pick up a file or folder from one location and drop in onto/in another?

Generally, it should work.
May this help in your case:
Configuration - Options - Operation - Mouse selection mode
[ ] Use right mouse button (as in NC) - context menu after 1 second
[✓] Left mouse button (Windows standard)
