Thumbnails for symbolic links?

Post by *jesped »

Total Commander doesn't show thumbnails for symlinks like it does for .lnk shortcuts.

Is there any way to fix this?

Unfortunately Symlinks to files show up with a file size of zero, so most thumbnail extraction methods will assume that the file is empty and not return a thumbnail.

Nevertheless, XYPlorer displays thumbnails for symbolic linked files just fine.

It probably tries to follow the symlinks manually and then try to extract thumbnails from the target(?).

So is it just not possible or can't be fixed?

It's possible, but Christian would have to implement it like XYplorer.
So nothing for the short term.

Ok, thanks anyway for the explanation, guys.

I wanted to use symlinks instead of .lnk shortcuts because some software like DupeGuru only works with Symlinks or Hardlinks (and hardlinks do not work for a different disk), and the creators/users say that symlinks are "so much better" than .lnk shortcuts (maybe has to do something with it working for Linux or whatever).

XYPlorer looks cool and all, but after 20 years I think I'm not gonna stop using TC any time soon...

Hard links should work because they show the correct size, but as you write they don't work with different disks. I will try to add reading the thumbnail from the target, it shouldn't be difficult.
